I was posting on the herp forum and one lady suggested a way i could make a home for corn snakes that would be much more insulated. she had 6 corns so im pretty sure she knew what she was doing. basically the idea is to contruct a wooden frame and then use styrofoam for the walls. I thinking this would be a great idea for snails especially if the lower part was lined with heavy duty plastic to stop leakage of mositure/substate. obviously for snails u would wanna get a sheet of clear plastic to go on the top to prevent escape and let them get light. she said this kind of insulative housing was brilliant for reducing the amount of heating used and cheap. also u could contruct it to the exact size u want. ;D just thought this sounded like a great idea if u are trying to maintain snails at the certain temperature. also styrofoam wouldnt get too hot like glass so it would be a health risk for dumb snails

That is a good idea, I'd never thought of that. I did wonder about building my own tank with a wooden frame but I wondered how to protect it. I thought varnishing it to make it waterproof may cause problems; it would flake off with time and the snails would eat it. I've since found out that snails can eat dried paint etc, they can process the cellulose in it. But the method your suggesting would be better. Perhaps the front panel could be sheet perspex. To make one completely out of perspex would be expensive but to just have a front panel wouldn't be too bad.
Then, at least you can have the size you want. And if you made it correctly, you could have one that can be disassembled for cleaning.
