Do you want me to sit in the corner and rust, or just fall apart where I'm standing?

Just bought a new tank, it's amazing! It's got a really clever lid. Each side opens separately so if snail is stuck to top then I can open the other side and snail has no risk of falling off. Great huh? Well I thought so but I'm easily amused ;D

Thats a really useful lid,i'm always afraid my snails fall off when i lift the lid(and it has happened),so one in two halves would be really handy. Perhaps you can post a pic ;D

I use one like that, I never thought about the lid at first, I was just looking for the biggest I could find and it happened to have a split lid. I remember thinking it was a bad point. But it soon became clear that it's a bonus. Flipping one side, to put food in etc, is a lot easier. I've moved mostly to glass now and I've been wondering if I could make a split lid for the glass tanks.

Im keeping larger snails in a hamster cage.. not as crazy as u think when i explain the hamster cage..
it has a 30inchx 10inch floor space, but its not very high. It has a plastic opaque base, which is about 6 inches deep and great for the substate. then it has a lid made of clear plastic which is about 8inches high.. the clear plastic continues all the way round the top of the tank and then there is a very thin wire mess grill which opens up on the top. only snails with a shell less than a 1cm could escape though this so its ideal for my large snails. It has the bonus of not being too high but having a large floor space wheras fish tanks are the other way around. my snails love it and they even have a plastic ledge that they slime on with little doors so they can hide during the day. I feel much happier seeing them with all that space to do their stuff.

Emma, that is such a coincidence!! I was actually looking at these hamster cages today and thinking Hmmmmmm they look useful. Like you I liked the amount of floor area, might invest in one of those later on. Don't know if they would use the wheel though. ;D

I took the wheel out of mine! I didnt think it would be much use to snails! apart from that its really useful for snail housing and much better than those tiny little plastic tanks you can buy. the little tanks are fine for young snails but I think they are too small for larger snails.

my tank, excuse the state of it, its being cleaned and the pics arent great as i dont have much light in the room at night so as not to disturb the animals. click for bigger pics. as yo ucan see the lids split and can either slide or lift.

the palstic ones are made by ferplast, can find them for around 20 quid or so, so not too bad, my tank out of interest cost me a tenner lol those ones are called the dunas, they make mini dunas, bit cheaper. got a metal grill on top though where yo ucan see the vnents, the whole bits a a metal grill that opens up. think its metal anyhows. i tell you who does make a nice plastic tank though, a bloke called lee. will find a pic and link.

I used to have one of those but couldn't find any that were big enough. The hamster cages were great, I used to have one but gave it away when my hamster died but I f I had kept it I would used that. It was good because it had two levels which I suppose would make it more interesting and give something to hide under.

heres a picture of the lid I was going on about: Snails have a new trick tho. They hang off the top, right in the centre, across the hindges so I can't open either side

I use a similar tank for my peripatus, They need to be kept really humid, so I had an idea to cover the inside of the lid with cellotape and used a pin to create loads of little holes...It now holds a lot more humidity..And the peripatus have been fine for months now, it must be working cause' their hard to keep (supposably) ;D

sellotape personally i do not reccomend sellotape to be used with any animal tank. the risk it poses is so not worth it.

Theres a risk Its been on the inside of the lid for several months or so, it hasnt become loose or anything, and it keeps the humidity in Come to think of it, my millipedes has had sellotape on the inside of their lid for around 18 months or so also...I know the tanks best for millipedes are hard to keep humid, but mine are kept very humid this way, not one of my millipedes has died in the 18 months since I kept them, all are very healthy and active also...I know millipedes are sometimes hard to keep alive, but my set-up works very well, and they seem to enjoy it

That is a worry i agree, Im confident this wont happen in my case though (I know what you mean though) I wouldnt use it for more destructive animals like snakes, lizards and other animals that scratch, and push their weight against the lids,
