Do you want me to sit in the corner and rust, or just fall apart where I'm standing?

Thats great I value peoples opinions, and if I wasnt 100% sure with the tape, then I would have removed it... I'm always open to suggestions on how to better my pets housing, you'll often find me asking for opinions on thing's on here im sure ;D

I have plastic tanks like that - but slightly different, and i put a teatowel over the lid which worked a treat.

The tea towel option works well. I do that it hot weather to maintain moisture. A tank which is overly moist can become unpleasant quickly so i think its important to have ventilation. with the tea towel option u can use/remove depending on conditions.
I tried the large clear plastic box thing a while ago but i found the lack of ventilation a problem. If i could make a lid with much more ventilation they would be ideal, cheap methods of housing.

I over-ventilated one of my storage boxes. I got it in my head that one of the snails didn't like being in the tank because it was too humid. When I moved him out to the room he came out. As a consequence I drilled loads more holes and now it is too ventilated, perhaps the same as a pet-pal/faunarium type tank.
I would suggest drilling the lid a little, and perhaps some holes around the top of the sides so you get proper airflow not just venting. Not too many though. Then add holes as necessary until it is just how you want it.

This Friday I'm going to an auction to buy some used fishtanks for my snails. I don't know what condition any will be in or if there will be any at all (there has been every other time). My aunt who usually goes has said shes seen a 5' x 2' x 2' tank go for about £8! Or a 3' tank go for one or two quid, there are usually a few of them as well. These are £100 - £200 for a 3' tank to £300+ for a 5' tank new, ver' ver' expensive! As you might guess I'm very exited! I'd buy them for others if I knew a way to deliver them without paying postage that was x20 the cost of the tank and could guarantee they'd arrive in one piece. You know what Royal Mail is like. I don't know if they'll come with snail proof lids or any lids at all, so any information about making them snail ready would be appreciated. Is there a certain kind of tank thats better than others? I doubt there'll be a perspex one for auction. Anything else I should be looking for in a tank? The auction doesn't finish 'till after midnight so I'll report what happened on Saturday. P.S. I am now a full member! This was my 100 th post!

most wont have snail proof lids, they normally have alip inside though so what i do is get two pieces of glass cut and then make two handles for them, can either cut glaziers to drill holes and use handles ot get couple rectangles of glass and stick em on with aquarium sealant.

There was alas, no tanks! There was a fish bowl and a small petpal one so I didn't bother. I still have a few months before my snails need bigger housing anyway so there isn't a rush

If anyone is interested I'll tell you what I did buy: A 10 year old computer (just the tower) that is as crappy as the day is long and a massive scanner that I didn't want but was part of the lot. I paid £4 for them together. A nice silver subwoofer for £4.50. A Camera case with two cameras, (a manual and an automatic) a telephoto lens and a load of instruction booklets all for a quid. I'm already selling some of the camera things on ebay and the computer (even though it works... just) I can take apart and put back together again so I can learn how the insides of computers work. So all in all, not a total waste!
