The ones here that uses plastic boxes for the snails to live in, how do they get light? I got a tip on some big and really cheap plastic boxes that I'm going to buy as soon as I get paid. They were quite tall so I thought I can install a lightbulb in the roof or something and put some net around it. What do you think, would it work? It would be really great, beacuse than they could stand on each other and give me more space in my room, and they're really big so I would only need 3 of them

The normal light bulb will illuminate the tank, but it won't provide any "real" light for the snails. You could use a tube light or a compact flourescent. This will provide a better type of light for the snails.
When you say plastic boxes, I'm not sure what you mean. I use some transparent plastic tubs for some of my snails. This material actually lets more UV through than glass.

They in there tank now! It lets plenty of light in, it's kinda translucent. I like the plastic tubs cause they hold the humidity well, you can control the ventilation well cause you put the holes in and you get some pretty dudey lids. I got one that each side opens separatly so it doesn't matter if the snails stuck to the top.

I like glass to, easier to carry. I've got glass aquariums but they're so heavy, it's hard to clean them out... ---------------- Hmm, I meant I like plastic...

i use a mix of palstic tubs and glass.lol plastic allows in about 10% of uvb whereas glass allows none. will post some pics of the nww cheap tubs in a minute. i use a rnage of sweet tubs, specially amde reptile palstic tanks and takeaway containers, and now plastic tubs with lockable lids.

I've got pics now! In this one I keep my tiger and a couple of the smallest snails I have for campany until I'm sure the tiger eats, then he's moving into the "main tub" instead with the others. What do you think, can I use boxes like this (only differens is that the boxes I'll be getting is much bigger, don't know the width exacly but they're 60 cm high at least)? How about lightbulbs, what do you think is the best for these boxes?

o ok. thats not very tall then. and you shouldnt use an unguarded bulb in their. also i cant see any air holes :S. what i do suggest is what i will be doing once iahve money too is cut out a slit and cover it with wide gaped mesh. then suspend a bulb overhead, i would reccomend using a reptile bulb, flourescent variety of the lowest uv output possible which is 2.0. one made by reptisun. called reptisun 2.0 funnily enough . does that make sense ?

Can't you hang a light over the box instead of placing it in there, that way you don't have to worry about snails burning themselves.

And I thought that was tall hehe ;D I would put net around of course. I already have net at home so there's no problem with that There's air holes, they're just many small ones. I can see some of them in the pic with the lid though Hmm, what do you mean with "cut out a slit and cover it with wide gaped mesh. then suspend a bulb overhead" I don't really understand it

I would be able to do that on the top one, but I would like to place the tubs on top of each other so it wouldn't work on the two on the bottom :/ Hmm, maybe I can make a pyramid, two besides each other on the bottom and one on top of them... They're so big it can fit on the sides. That'll be great

ok, got your box lid, so you cut out a 2 inch by say 5 inch hole. you then attach mesh over the hole to stop the snails escaping. then hang the light over the top.

Ceiron, in the pic of your glass tank, what is that you have on the left side? Is it a heater of some sort? Annelie said her boxes would be 60cm thats 2 foot which is VERY high!!

Just thought of something. Would it work with doing lots and lots of small holes on the lid in stead of a big one to have net over. Just though that than the plastic would still work as both a lid and net, at the same time as it would let the light in and protect the snails from the heat. What do you think? If it would work, how small would the holes have to be? I am able to have holes almost 1 cm wide now, but what if I want to get babies that can get through it you know.
