Sorry if this has been done, I'm way too tired to read through the threads and I'll forget later lol. I just wondered what the most used substrate is for your snailies. Also, what would you guys say is the: easiest one to use one that stays clean the longest (if there is one lol) looks nicest is best for the snails and the one that holds the moisture the longest. I need to find something that's easy to clean as I have arthritis and lugging the tanks about to make sure every bit of substrate is off of the sides can be annoying sometimes (they don't fit in the sink so I have to clean them out in the bath ). I've used soil, bark chip (3 - 4 mm size) and fine bark chip (as fine as soil almost) but they all seem as much as a pain to clean as each other!! Would an all sphagnum moss substrate be ok? I had an idea of putting a tray of soil/bark in the tank, then filling the rest of it with moss. It would make it a bit easier for me to clean. And if any of that made sense replies would be greatly appreciated lol.

I use the same for stick insects and snails. Plastic boxes rather than glass tanks, semi clear storage ones from ikea, capillary matting and spagnum moss. Plantpot of soil for egg laying. Plant pot trays for water/crushed oystershell/food. Makes keeping it clean very easy, very lightweight, low maintenance, no parasites or nematodes in soil, no mites. Notice the fulcia dont like the feel of the matting much, tends to make all the snails more active than peat. Tigers dont care at all, neither do the lucorum. Looks unatural, not at all attractive, but then for me it doesnt need to be Just clean and easy to maintain.

Ooo. I have them in plastic tanks, is no way I'd put them in glass ones lol. Would never be able to clean them out then!
What's this capillary matting I keep seeing said about everywhere lol. I've not heard of it, or if I have it's been called something different. Does it have some other names? *Does some google searching* lol
At the moment my set ups are the same, the bigger bark chip, some moss (not much as I've run out) water dish and food dish. And in the main tank I have some fake plants. I've used flowerpots before and they've just moved them around like it was a football lol. I never actually saw them in it!
That sounds like a nice set up you have there, especially the easy to clean and maintain bit! I'm not really that bothered about it looking nice, just wondered what people though. I think it looks nice with the fake plants I have anyway as they stick to the side so they're not "in the way" as such.
Who's next?! lol

Hiya Sian I use all sphagnum moss in my tanks - love it It is re-usable and fairly easy to clean. Snails seem happy with it. Only trouble is it isn't cheap and not widely available all year round. But you can buy it online. With my big snail tank I tend to pick the pooh out when I take their food bowls out each night, big snails = big pooh so easy to see. lol! Keeps it cleaner for longer When you do come to cleaning the tanks, I half fill a bucket with warm water, bung all the moss in and swish it and squish it alot, ring it out and its fine to put back in. Then flush the water with all the tiny bits of moss down the loo ) Its also cleaner than peat etc to get off the tank. I just use a jug to pour water in the empty tanks, sponge it down and pour water away. I think I'm rambling now, Hope I have helped though. Nat

Ahh yes that's why I bought the moss to try in the first place. Re useable! I love things that say that haha It is quite expensive but I have seen it cheapish online. I'll have to have a look about. I don't mind rambling! I do it all the time lol. And yes you've helped, both of you have some great set up ideas. I might try mixing bits of both lol. I'm just looking up that capillary matting at the moment. Do you just use a normal sponge to clean it? I.E the ones for cleaning dishes with the green stuff on the top of the sponge? Oh yeah, what are everyones views on that vermiculite stuff? I've seen some pages say it's good then others say it's not And I forgot I've also used that expanding substrate. The coconut shell stuff.

I looked at that earlier! lol. *hears twilight zone music* Looks nice. It kinda looks like grass... if you squint lol I'll deffo look around for some of that matting then. Looks like it's the easiest thing to go for. Will use a few of the other ideas you guys have said about too, if you don't mind lol I've also just seen about the coco liner on that thread. I think I'll get some of both and see who prefers what lol.
