Why can we only use capillary matting in tanks, why not normal carpeting or toweling?

you could use either in theory, just capillary matting is designed to distribute water to plant pots, and remain damp, it retains water well, less likely to go mouldy too I'd imagine because its quite compact,
I'd imagine carpet would be difficult to clean, and possibly break down after a shorter while? might smell a bit, And towling wouldnt distribute the water as well, would take longer to soak across the whole surface,
cheaper options, but I doubt by that much? Got my capillary, 60cm by 200cm for £7 from b&q, 2 lots has done 14 oddly shaped 12x16 inch tanks and alot of smaller "pots". Toweling must be at least £3 a meter?

Is this stuff soft to touch? I am tempted to try some.

I'm trying to get some of this and some coco liner.
I saw some capillary matting in Focus today, £11.99 for 8 foot by 2 foot, if that helps. I'm still having a look around though.

Haha yep.
I've still got the check Homebase and B and Q if I can get there.. and then the Wyvale garden center. I've looked on ebay and they sell it by the meter, but it's £3 something per meter and then of course there's the postage.

Its the stuff used to line hanging baskets so if they're not selling it by the foot, there's always the circles of it if you really need it. I've seen it at Fermoys.

I think the circles are coir fibre, capillary matting is either sold by the foot or you can buy a piece in a packet. Yes I would think B & Q would have it.
