I was wondering where you all buy your moss, and how much you get for the price? I buy it from Focus at the moment but its expensive and its a tiny bag.

I've not bought it from many places, I started off with that rubbish moss that zoo med or exo terra sell, the green stuff. It's not sphagnum but it is moss (I didn't know the diff when I first bought it) but it doesn't hold water aswell as sphagnum. I got that from any reptile shop I saw it in! I bought a load of sphagnum from ebay a few weeks ago and it's great, it was £4.99 for 100grams which the seller said makes roughly 800 when wet. Apart from that I haven't bought any other sphagnum lol I got so fed up with that other moss I just bought the cheapest sphagnum on ebay at the time! There's quite a few sites online that sell it, one pf the main ones I know sells it dry and wet, the other just sells wet but that second one is better value, but then of course there is the postage so I don't know how good it really it. www.cornishcrispa.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_170 that's one that sells dry and wet faunology.co.uk/shop/customer/home.php?cat=302 and that's the one that sells it dry but it's better value than the first one lol *stops rambling now!*

On cornish crispa co, you add everything you want to the basket then click checkout and it shows you how must postage will be there, on the other one you add everything you want and then click your basket and it shows the postage at the bottom. It normally choses the cheapest it can, depending on the weight, but I always check that's it's on the lowest one.
I think with postage it's probably expensive, but if you can't get it any cheaper anywhere else then it's probably the easiest.

I got mine from our local garden centre cost about £4.50 for a big bag. I have been rinsing and re-using it and it seems to last a long while in fact I only replace it when it starts to smell a bit stale.

That's what I thought too lol. I was going to buy more things to make the postage seem less, but everything else I looked at wasn't light enough to not put the postage up even more lol
We goto a few garden places, I'll have a look round all of them and let you know what I find.

I bought 5kg of sphagnum moss from the same seller. It was £12 plus £8 delivery. It was enough to fill my big tank and 6 tubs also. Quick delivery too.
How long does this moss last before it needs changed? I have previously used compost and just totally changed it about once a month but I hear folk on here saying they just wash the moss and re-use it?
thanks, Brian ;D

You'll just know Brian lol. It gets to a point when you wash it and wash it and it still looks really crap basically lol.
I got 2 bags of moss from focus for 2.99 each. No idea how much is in each bag but I still haven't used even half of it and that's with 4 tanks.

with the amount of waste that comes from my 6 margies I am not sure I fancy washing all that crap off of the moss Should be fine in the smaller tanks though. Brian ;D

Thanks for the link Pixie! I too bought just 3 bags of them and I am still waiting for getting e-mail for p&p to Austria. I do like this forest moss. I personally don´t like sphagum-moss, it is so smelly/stinky for me. I just don´t like it´s smell (the snails seem not to care). I use moss in my tanks together with cocohumus and the moos helps a lot to keep the tanks dampy.

Isn't that a larged antlered animal too ;D I get my sphagnum for about £4 for a bag of wet, that does a Tommy tank twice over. But to be honest, my snails are out and about more, and with nicer shells, on compost - they do still have some moss in there for burying in too. I should have them in the big fish tank at the end of the week at the latest, as soon as my cappillary matting arrives, but dont know how easy easy to clean up it would be if I put moss in one corner on the top of that. I'll be putting a digging tub (or cat litter tray) filled with compost too. No doubt my biggies will wreck that as soon as they get into it *lol* Hmm...I wasn't really any help there was I? Edited to add - I get mine from my local reptile shop. But I think they do it in Do it All too?

I said they did Lisa "Focus" is "do it all" lol. I hate forest moss lol. Well "terranium" moss to be exact. I used to by the zoo med/exo terra (still never remember which is which) terranium moss and it was sh*te. It hardly held any water!! It was easier to wash than the sphagnum, but that's nothing to me if it doesn't hold enough water lol. And if it was meant to be sphagnum then they'd done something to it. lol That one in the link just looks like the dried sphagnum I bought lol. The terranium moss I used to get was green. (Focus do their moss in green and "normal") As for how easy it is to clean up Lisa, it is pretty easy on capillary matting. I have the matting, then put the ornaments/bowls in then chuck moss over the rest of the space lol. In the big tank I have a tub with a deep layer of moss in for egg laying, and when my fulica were in there they used it every time they laid There wasn't a single egg in the rest of the moss, they were only the tub!

It's not very nice from the info I found. It's like astro turf apparently lol
The repti carpets around look good though. They say they absorb. But they're more expensive than the capillary matting for me.

My local B&Q are selling sphagnum moss for 50p per 1kg bag! (It's usually £2.98) So I bought 12kgs, lol!
Not sure if they are all doing it or if it's just surplus stock they are getting rid of.

PMSL, wish my B and Q were that good. Everything we ask about there is in their bigger stores. Well, it used to be a big store, and it's not shrunk *lol* They dont even do capillary matting there. It's got a bloomin' garden centre bit, and they dont do capillary matting???! I need moss. I'd sent hubby down if I didn't know they'd say they didn't have it
