We're thinking of getting a fish tank for our snailies, probably after Chrimbo. I've got two questions - firstly - what size would we need for 5 (or poss 6) snails, would a 4ft tank do? And secondly - do we just use the normal hood that comes with one, or would we have to construct something?
Oh yeah, and fish tank set up piccies would be fab for inspiration! ;D

Wow, then could I have my two fulicas, two dimis, one retic, and room for a margie or two in there then? And if any baby tigers came up? Cos I can get a 4ft tank for £69 (hence it being after chrimbo!), if they still have them, if not PAH have some cheap tanks too.
So do you just use the normal hood that comes with a fish tank as a lid? And do you need lighting in one?

I don't use lighting in any of my tanks, it's not essential. I just use the see through plastic lids you get that go under the black hoods as lids for my tanks, and put holes in it.

I have a clear seal (sp?) tank and I had to drill loads of tiny holes in the lid that came with it for ventilation. That wasn't a problem, but these thin flimsy lids are already prone to cracks, so drilling holes in them may make them weaker.

The lid on my glass tank can crack sometimes when cleaning out. I would advise to use a drill (if you have one) rather than a knife. This is because a drill makes clean cut holes with no sharp bits of plastic sticking out. Also, it is much easier to do, just set the drill up and there you go.

Wouldn't you only have to do that if you were going to hatch the eggs though?

I'm not interested in breeding them or anything. Ours are purely pets, we hatched a couple of fulicas, that's it - done with - I just froze Sam's latest eggs (and will continue to do so). It's not as if I've got any rare species, just fulicas and dimidiatas, there's plenty of those available as it is - no need to make more.

Anyone got any piccies of their aquarium (snailarium? *lol*) set ups? Also, I'd be really grateful if anyone could let me know about lighting.

No-one?
I was thinking, it would be nice for new owners to see other folks set ups, it'd be fab if there was a site (or even a page on Petsnails.co.uk) who had a habitat gallery of users set ups, so that we could get ideas without having to trawl the forum?
This is where you tell me there is one, and I have to sit in the corner with the dunce cap on...

Paul probably has some space left on the site No worries, I'd started on a personal page for each member, but I wasn't quite sure how to continue. So I'll ask you lot. Would you prefer: A section where you enter the details of your snails, including pictures etc and it builds a page for you with all the relevant info. This would allow more integration because all your info will be captured formally. But it is limiting slightly for the same reason. For example, if you entered new snails, and people were waiting for that species, they could be informed and vice-versa. If I allow people to name their own species, that is less possible because we'll get all sorts of spelling differences and mistakes. On the other hand, we'd need a massive list of species (which incidentally, I'm not against). Or a section where you can effectively make your own html page so it can look exactly how you want it to. Or something inbetween, where species aren't defined formally, you just create new snails named by yourself, but your pages would be entirely independent of the rest of the website. I'm not sure what the far-reaching effects would be of either, I've been trying to find the perfect solution, which probably doesn't exist. So, I'd like your thoughts before I continue...

For me personally the first option would be best(and the easiest one too),with the species named as they should be,which makes looking info up simpler too.
