i have a heat mat on the side of my tank but it doesnt work that well at all. the temperature only stays just above 15 degres at night!! i will get a light but will it change the temperature a lot?

15 degrees should be adequate at night aslong as the snails are still active and eating.

yeah but it was used for marsupiuls (?) not snails

Yeah I know, but some people have already shown that their snails are ok with heatmats on the inside of the tank, so this is sort of the same as that. It might work for some, not for others. The only way to find things out is to try them.
If you get the lowest wattage light bulb you can and keep it outside of the tank and turn it on, then you can judge if you think it's too hot for the snails.
