The aim is to maintain a temperature of c. 26°C and a relative humidity of c. 80% in each tank (Caswell, 1956).( For Lissachatina, Achatinas and Archachatinas). The humidity was originally assisted by the inclusion of large bowls of water but, when many animals are present, it is better to avoid excessive wetness by reliance on the food and the animals themselves. On temperature, we have to accept the inevitable swing of 2-3°C above and below the mean. We therefore set the thermostats at 25°C and check that the maximum does not much exceed 28°C nor the minimum fall below 23°C. A swing in either direction beyond these points results in a rising rate of snail aestivation and if the temperature change is prolonged snail deaths follow.

I thought I would share with the forum my snail activities today , I have been preparing my two exo terra tanks for the colder weather by putting insulation around the sides and back of the tanks. I have used all purpose insulating sheets from B&Q ( it looks like a cross between bubble wrap and foil) I have cut to size and fastened it on with tiny sticky dots these came in a sheet and were about £2.50. The insulation was expensive at £13.00 but this amount would do more tanks. The dots have made it look like the insulation isn't fastened on if I had used Sellotape it would be visible.the tanks are in our front room and my husband is keen that they look tidy. I am very pleased with the results and the temperature is maintaining at 26 c where it had dropped to 24c for the last couple of days when the weather had turned chilly. The snails are just waking up ready for their tea so I will see if they like it shortly . My snail family consists of three tigers and two marginatas in one tank and eight fulicas ( three albino with tortoise shells and five jadatzi ) in the other tank.

Hi snailbaby , It would be great if you could post a photo of what you have done. So we can see the results and help others to do the same as it sounds like you have had some success with this . vallery

Do you keep thermometers in your tanks?

Usually no, but sometimes I place one inside it just to check if it´s ok. Regarding heating, I use a heated carpet (covered by the substrate) and it seems to be effective.
