It´s possible to re-use coir, putting boiling water on it ( after taking off the snails and other things of course )? It isn´t dangerous if you do it, inside the tank, regarding the danger of damaging the tank itself? apple

I'm not sure why you are doing this apple? I just pick out the poo and uneaten food. Val

Coir can go quite rancid when its continuously wet. I can understand the desire to clean it with boiling water. But isnt it quite a messy job? Its not that expensive to replace.

Can it not just be baked like people do with soil?

Can it not just be baked like people do with soil? On the micro wave? I can´t because I´m talking about kilos and more kilos of coir... ;D Maybe I´ll just put the coir on a cement ground outside, and just put some boiling water on it, to kill nasties and whatever. Val- I take the poo and the pieces of food that snails don´t eat, don´t worry, ;D. Copigeon- here coir is bit expensive and you only find far from where I live. So, I´m just trying to do things that suits best for me.

Actually I mean the oven, but that still might be too small? Can you do it in smaller batches?

Well you could, put it in a hessian sack, and run a hose in it?
Would swill through the coir, and drain through the hessian sack? You wouldnt need boiling water. Just, swilling it out?

Actually I mean the oven, but that still might be too small? Can you do it in smaller batches? LoL. Yes , I can do it in smaller batches, but will take a long time loool. « hey snailies you have my entire afternoon, for today» lool Thanks to try to help. Copigeon The boiling water is because of nasties, unfortunately.... We never know when they come back, so I´m trying to be aware of that... I wish I had a frog here that will keep the work for me, but if I don´t boil it ( the coir) I would wish a thousand of frogs and not only one... I can´t find traps here, so I have to prepare myself it... Hopefully I´ll move to another place.

Actually I mean the oven, but that still might be too small? Can you do it in smaller batches? I found that this is the more practical, clean and efective solution. With boiling water the temperature are much lower than the one that oven offer us. The oven is economic too and even if doesn´t allow to work with big amounts, I can do it patiently, only using smaller amounts each time, but it´s worth enough to do that.
