I have bought a bag of compost that says organic African Violet Compost, it also says free from Nitrates, Herbicides, Pesticides, Fungicides and growth Modifiers. I imagine it is a good compost for our snails, but just wanted to be sure before putting it in. I am hoping my margies and tigers will breed, but so far no sign of any interest in each other, and thought perhaps it is their subtrate. Right now we are using capillary matting with a big pile of sphagnum moss in the corner over top of the area where the heat mat is.

Sounds good yes... Only thing I can say from my experience with organic soil is that I found a lot of pests in there, like worms (or maggots) and mites. This may not be the case with the soil you have bought but there you go lol. On the other hand it is good that it has no added chemicals.

Do you want me to sit in the corner and rust, or just fall apart where I'm standing?

You could bake it first to kill any pests.

I fill the tank to about 6-8 cm of soil...or moss.

Also, depends on the height of your tank...

I can't find my measuring tape, but it's probably about 2 and a half to three feet deep. The doors open on the front and the bottom of the doors are about 6 inches up. So i can probably fill it to just below the doors. if the bag is big enough... It's only a 4 litre bag.

By what you say I would put in about soil of 6cm depth... Deep enough for them to bury in.

Is it one of those exoterra ones? Sp.? yep, thats the one! I find I have to keep a towel over the top as the screen lets the humidity out, but the towel seems to work well.

It doesn't say anything about peat on the packaging. Could it still have some? I don't think I have seen any coir in the petshops near me, would a garden center have it?
