hello. if you told me a year ago that I was going to have snails as pets. I would have laughed. but it is true. next week Im going to have 8 A.marginata.
so I surfed through the internet for more info on these beautifull creatures and saw all kinds of info on these snails. but some of them confuse me. they all say something else. so I would like some things here
1. what soil should I use? 2. how big should the tank be (the shell of the snails are about 5 cm)
and forgive my bad english, because I'm from holland.
thanx and greetings Jennifer

your English is perfect ;D you can use organic soil, that has no added ingredients or pesticides, you can also use other substrate like spagnum moss, coir and capillary matting. 8 margies you will need a lot of room, they may be only 5cm now but margies are one of the biggest species next to tigers and grow to an average 18cm shell length, and in my opinion (will have to wait for other replies) i would only keep 2 margies to a 2 foot tank when fully grown, at 5cm maybe 4 margies to a 2 foot tank but will definately need up grading when older See what other people say too... Do you know all tha basic care like having to supply cuttlebone, what to feed them etc?

haha thnx I just asked somebody if they would like some of them at school, because they are getting big. the person that has them now is not really good with them. they are in a 45x20x20 cm. so I think I will keep half of them as I'm getting 2 A. fulica on 19 march (there is a show in Houten in holland). I've been told that they need cuttlebone and vegetables but does it matter what kind of vegetables I feed them? further I didn't found much info on them but I guess that they need a lot of water? is there something I need to know before I get them?

If you can't find homes for them you can always advertise them on here and send them out in the post Vegetable wise, you can feed them basically any fruit and veg apart from cellery, leek and pasta! they will also eat sunflower seeds, pumkin seeds, hemp seed, chick crumb, layers pellets, damp bread and plain cooked meat, Margies in particular do like water, and will appreciate a pool to bath in, then all you need to do it spray them with a plant mister everyday and make sure they are kept warm with a heat mat or heat lamp between 22° and 28°C, If you get eggs from them you have a choice of hatching them and selling them or freezing them in the freezer over night, not just throw them away as they may still hatch in the bin, lol I thinks thats the basics, hope you enjoy your new pets :-) and if you have anymore questions then don't hesitate to come back and ask anything

well it will because fulica are a lot smaller so you can fit more in a tank,

A metre?!?! a metre is like 2½ foot do you know? you can barely fit 3 fully grown margies in there, or do you mean at 5cm?

I'm not going to keep them all. 4 of them are going to school and I think 2 others will be going somewhere else. I can't keep 8 margies in my house. but the person that has them now want to get rid of them.. well here I am

not yet. I was suppose to pick them up yesterday, but he coudn't be there at daytime and later I was celebrating carnaval. he has to go to work the rest of the week, so saturday he will bring them to my home. if I speak him before them I shall ask for a photo.
I was asking myself today. If I asked him about the age of the snails now as the shell is cm long, would that help me to know if they are A. fulica or A. marginata? (I suppose fulica's are smaller at the same age as a margie? if you know what I mean?)

nt really because margies grow a lot slower than fulica, a one year old fulica is fully grown whereas a one year old margie is not even mature
