Just got this unusual shell of Achatina achatina depravata Bequaert, 1950 which was found in Foret du Banco, just outside Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Shell length 154mm. Although the shell is white ( i.e. patternless ) it is not really albino. The columella is ( as usual for the species ) bright pink, whilst the spire is also slightly pinkish.

That's beautiful Brunni Was it a wild snail? I'm wondering because the dark bands show periods of inactivity, yet at other times it seems to indicate that food was plentiful and conditions were just right. It looks to me as if it went through seasonal estivation.

It's a wild one. You are very observant ! The dark bands are in the shell's skin ( periostracum ), not in the shell itself which is white underneath the bands. They can probably related to months of rainfall/growth and periods of hibernation or aestivation/drought ( much like scientists examine growth rings in tree trunks to see years of regular or stunted growth ). Probably in an artificial environment ( i.e. cb GALS ) this feature is absent ?

Here's a really graceful specimen of Achatina achatina elegans Link, 1807. This form is less than 150mm, as typical , ovate in outline, the spire much narrower than the base (Bequaert 1950). Check out the first one in the bottom row here : www.petsnails.co.uk/images/species/achatina/achatina/subspecies.jpgSize : length 141mm, max width 65mm Locality : w.c. on farmlands, near Axim, western region, Ghana
