Hiya folks, Here I am, doing something I never in my WILDEST/SCARIEST dreams imagined I would!!! Posting about snails!!?!!??!!
Right, well, my (real) name's Y'Vette, and I have 2 kids, the youngest of whom is the reason I'm posting here! Connell (my son) is nearly 5 and absolutely ADORES snails! He sees one and goes into raptures of delight, telling me (and everyone else!) Look, she's (in Conns' eyes, ALL snails are girls!) so "bbrrrruuuuutifuw" - translates as beautiful!!!
So, having caught him in the garden this morning, kissing one, I've decided that it's time to look at getting him his own - at least that way we know it's not been trailing thru' anything nasty!
Hence my being here! Could any of you great folks out there advise me as to what to go for, as a 1st-time snail-keeper? What breed (is that the right word? See, I told you, I'm a complete "mollusc-moron!!!")? What will it need? living quarters, food, environment etc.
I DO want to do the right thing by this/these creature/s, and give it/them the best possible life I can, so ANY and ALL advice is MOST welcome! :-)
Many thanks in advance.
Be well,
Y'Vette (A.K.A. "Adrie")

Hi Yvette - Connell sounds just like me when I was little - snail mad ;D
If you are looking for a giant african snail the best species to start with would be fulicas I would say. You can find information on this species on the home page by clicking on the petsnails logo on the right of the screen above. Under species you will find 'Achatina Fulica' and under care all the information you will need about housing and feeding etc. Once you have read up and are all prepared check out the classifieds section here for snails - or ebay is another good source for fulicas. Using the search option on this forum is another way of finding info for specific information and of course you can always ask anything by posting.
Welcome and good luck!

Hi adrie! Im no snail expert either by anymeans, but ive been on this forum for a while and have looked into stuff a bit. Do you think your son would like a large snail? Because if so then he would probably love a giant african land snail, there are many species of these but some are very widely available for just the prices of postage and packaging! The most widely available one for these prices are 'achatina fulica', they have an average shell size of 12cm long. Look around this forum for pictures of fulica, and you could look at my fulica on my site www.freewebs.com/rubb3rsgallery . They are lovely pets but will need a bit more space than garden snails. Storage boxes make very good homes for giant african land snails if you want to save money. Fish tanks make good homes but they will cost more. Have a look on the utilities section of www.petsnails.co.uk to see what size tank you will need for a certian amount of fulica or any other species. They only need to be fed once a day and only require very simple attention. If you are interested in buying some fulica aloit of people pn this forum have them available, and so do i. Just make a thread in the classifieds section and/or PM me. I hope ive been of some help! Peter
