Ive just invested in a food dehyrdrator to make "more nutritious " snail biscuits for my apple snails. Just curious if anyone has used/uses one or has got one for this purpose?
Im not sure if its going to do what I expect it to do, but as it is baking biscuits involves adding binding agents etc which arnt of benefit to the snail and just "bulk up" what should be primarily greenstuff. Cooking also changes the state of the veg, where as dehydrating just removes the moisture so should retain the majority of the "goodness".
Curious if drying could produce powders too for adding into land snail mixtures, like invertsupplies powdered mushroom.

hey this is interesting! have you tried your dehydrator? It does what you expected? Just to know, which brand and model have you got? and, if you whant to say me, how much was the investiment? tks ^_^

I ended up with an ezidri... something, can take up to 30 trays of food. It works dries veg/fruit snail biscuits etc, which store for ages. I havent perfected a recipe for snail biscuits yet though, so still in experimentation side. Im hoping when I work out how best to prepare/combine ingredients I can make dried aquatic snail biscuits which having required no cooking retain all of the goodness of the veg. As for land snails I havent made plans yet, but feasably could dry almost anything and add it to a powdered mix as with the hemp etc.

wow O.O I love it! I've done a research... in italy only 1 model is avalaible... I think I'll search for one from one other country ^_* I also had the idea of made some snail-bisquits, of course not to use like usual food, but that could be helpful in some situation, like weekend food or similar. mmm I'm doing a serious think about it.

Ask Daz from snails2die4, he uses dehydrators. You can produce aquatic and land snail food, but obviously water needs to be re-added for land snails on feeding.
The idea of dehydrating is that it does so at less than 46°C. Above that temperature the proteins and vitamins are denatured and killed so it really does make more nutritious foods. It's exactly like sun-dried tomatos and the like.
I used a warm cupboard to dry out dandelion leaves and then I grated them using a metal sieve. It's a great way of keeping greens through winter.
