Here are some pictures of some of my Helix Pomatia, others feel free to upload pictures if you also keep Helix pomatias. This is Boris and Olga they are both 9 months old and are the largest and the smallest of that hatch. Boris shell is about 5 centimeters long and olga 3 centimeters This is olga and boris on a coca cola can This is Ivan, also from boris and olgas hatch. he is slightly smaller than boris. He has been recovering from an pretty nasty shell damage recently and therefore stopped in growth otherwise he'd probably still be the largest of that Hatch. The damage was on the top of his shell and I believe it was a falling incident in the tank(did'nt see the accident just noticed the damage the next morning). Helix Pomatia turn white when they get full grown, very beautifull, I don't have any pictures of my older ones but as soon as I get I will upload them.

Here are some pictures of white Helix Pomatias, as I promised. I'm sorry for the quality of the pictures.. Anyway, These are Helix Pomatia that turned white by aging. These six actually live wild in sweden and are just taken indoors for the photograph. In sweden there are small populations of wild Pomatia since the 1600's when they where brought here by christian monks as food. You can most often find where there previously been monasterys or castles. This specific population is found in the vicinty of a garden of an old botanist who brought them there from a colony found near an old monastery. The wild helix pomatia in sweden often don't grow as large as those keept in captivity, probably because of the harsh conditions in weather and temperature compared to those of france or italy. These snails are a little smaller than the two larger ones I earlier showned photos of, wich are borned in captivity and actually not fully-growned yet.

This is what I call a black helix, I've only seen 3 of thoose ever and this time I had a camera.. It's not really black but very dark brown, almost purple, I'm telling you cause it's hard to tell from the pic. I think to colour could be caused by a similar genetic disnormality like the one that causes albinism. I was thinking of adding this one to the team and try breeding him with some of my other pomatias in order to find out if I could breed for this trait. Anyone who knows if this is genetical or just caused by abnormality in feeding?

I would think it's genetic. It would be interesting if you could breed it to see what the offspring would be like.

It could be a case of melanism, which is like the opposite of albinism.
There are a lot of black melanistic squirrels here in my town, in addition to the more normal grey ones. For some reason the melanistic population is very high, possibly due to them breeding with each other a lot. The melanistic population seems to be increasing, too.

Thanks for the information, havent heard of melanism before. I will most probably try to mate this melanistic pomatia with my snails. Stop me if I'm picturespaming but I've just taken this picture of Boris an Ivan mating wich I found could be interesting to "spieces specific" because of the way Pomatias mate in comparision to most GALS. belly to belly or what it's called with snails
