My helix aspersa never wants to come out during the day. He always has himself burried in the substrate (I guess because there arenÈt any hidey holes for him in his home) all day long. I know he comes out at night because in the morning his food is eaten.. Is this normalÉ (ugh sorry, my keyboard is messed up ) Does anyone else keeping garden snails find this happen for themselves

Garden snails are nocturnal. It is normal for them to sleep during the day and be active at night.

coyote is right and yes, like lizzie said, the more you have them out in the day the more used to the light they will become xD

ah, ok, yes i thought i heard somewhere that they were nocturnal, i wasnt sure though.. does that go the same for all snails, or just this type? I guess i will try to get him used to the daytime, though i feel mean for waking him up all the time.. Im guessing its probably hard on their systems to do that to them since their bodies are made for living during the night. Im no biologist by any means (and i know snails are a far cry from humans lol..) but I know if a person changes their lifestyle to sleeping during the day and up at night it can cause health issues. Maybe its totally different for snails, not a clue. Has anyone ever done any research of sorts? I'm tempted to look up different species of nocturnal animals on the net to see if any such a study has been done (im assuming this knowledge for snails is unknown since they arent a popular subject :/)

I know that if the tank humidity is high enough and the temperature cool enough, my aspersa will be active during the daytime. It helps if the light levels are low.
ETA: As to whether it will adversely affect their health, I don't know. That's why I mostly let my snails decide for themselves when they want to be out and about.

i find that mine come out when its darker. so if you make the room dark, then that may help, but that may just be my snails
