I have a female purple apple snail who is egg-heavy at present, but never has that been so accurate. The glass shelving, good enough for her sister, will not suffice, oh no. It must be on the condensation tray above or nothing. These past two hours I have watched her search for the exactly right place to lay them, and seven times so far she has tried to stretch from the shelf up to the condensation tray, and seven times she has fallen down and sunk to the bottom of the tank, only to grimly try a different route to the desired spot. Out of sympathy - I don't want her to lay her eggs and then expire from sheer exhaustion, poor pet - I have lowered one corner of the tray and being a bright girl she has found it and finally made it up there.
Oh no! Even as I write this she has fallen again. If only she weren't so particular - the others in the tank lay anywhere handy. She is having a rest, floating on the surface and peering the smallest fraction out from her shell.
I wish her luck on her next attempt! This is like a snail version of reality tv - I can watch them for hours.

Wow, sounds like a very stubborn snail. Do you think she will succeed?

As of this morning there are no new egg clusters but she came to the surface to funnel-catch their morning fish flakes so perhaps she is fortifying herself for another attempt. I have no idea how long apple snails can hold their eggs when they're this close to laying - nature may make her pick a more convenient spot....

Update: She was resting all day but when I came home from class about an hour ago she was making another attempt - unfortunately having traversed most of the length of the tank upside down on the tray, she just fell again. This is seriously one picky lady I have here! @snailsanctuary - I made a short video of a tank full of young apple snails and sent it to a friend. Not only their usual explorations but also I'd dropped a few slices of veg in and they were floating, carried by the fairly strong current, so the video consisted of snails wandering about, every now and then one tumbling to the ground, and about once every thirty seconds a slice of cucumber rushing by with a few snails riding them like surfboards. We agreed it was like watching Lemmings in slow motion

I love it! ;D A couple of years ago someone on Cybersnail posted about her apple snail that took up surfing. He would climb to the top of the filter, flatten his body and put himself in the path of the air as it propelled him across the tank, doing it over and over. How can anyone not love a surfing snail?

She is right now at this very minute laying her eggs! She has chosen the exact opposite corner from where others have laid, naturally, and is on the glass side, near the top - an apparently unremarkable spot, but it seems to fit her requirements, which is the main thing. At last! I was worried she would be a modern Odysseus, questing for years.
