Our GALS George is about the size of my fist and is nearly 4 years old. For the last few months he has been really hard to wake up and has just been covering up his outlet area and just will not eat. We have tried everything but yesterday we noticed that his insides have started to come out. I looked this up and it says his intestines have come out and he will be in pain and we should have him put to sleep. This is too awful. Our poor George. How do to give a snail rest? Do we need to take him to the vets? He has now more or less retacted fully into his shell with just the gut hanging out. I feel like crying. What can we do? He may have passed on already I guess but I don't know how you tell.

I'm so sorry I am not sure how vets would put a snail down, possibly a large dose of sedative, but one way to put snails down humanely is to put them in the freezer for 24 hours. As it gets colder, they go to sleep and then pass away. If you suspect he may already have passed but want to be sure, again, the freezer is probably the humanest way.

I'm very sorry souffle for your loss, the most common way to euthanize snails is to freeze them and it's often described as the less painful way, of course it's painful for us who have to freeze them as it takes some time. I don't think the vet can help as they most often dont know anything about snails. If you're uncertain if your snails condition is of the kind that euthanize is the best way or not I can only recomend the main page www.petsnails.co.uk/problems/. It does however sound like your snail has had an gut extrusion, which I dont think theres any hope for. You have my sympaties as I know how hard it is to take this kind of descisions.

Thank you for your help and kind thoughts. We will talk about it and decide what is best for poor George. He was a fine and grand snail and did not deserve this to happen to him. I guess his time has come to climb over the rainbow bridge XX

Will it really not hurt him if we freeze him? We are very worried it will hurt.

He will feel the cold but his body rhythms will quickly slow him down into deep sleep. You could put him in a box to prevent him touching ice or other frozen things in there, so he doesn't feel it directly. Other methods of euthenasia tend to be less pleasant and more traumatic for both snail and human - nothing I'd want to inflict on a much-loved pet. It's a hard decision, I know.

I am SO sorry this has happened *hugs*. I know its hard, but if its gut extrusion its best to let him rest. He'll just slowly go to sleep, like when a vet puts a cat to sleep. I know its hard, but you've done your best. Let him go then give him a nice burial, and remember all the happy times you've had. I really am sorry *hugs*

It's hard to say if he's still with you, but that definitely looks like a gut extrusion to me RIP, George, you will be missed by those who loved you.

I'm so sorry about George. Last year I lost a snail to swollen mouth, which is sometimes a precursor to gut extrusion. I had to euthanize him, and it was extremely difficult to actually put him in the freezer. No one likes having to euthanize their snail, but sometimes we must because there is no other choice.
Rest in peace, George. I'm sure you will live forever in Souffle's heart.
