I have post threads in many amphibian and reptil forum without any good answer, so i thought that maybe someone here may have the right knowledge. Here is my question. I want to know if Pancake slugs (Veronicella sloanei) can be a good food surce for larger salamanders? I also wonder the same about this african slug( Emphysetes udzungwensis ) I want to know if they can be any harm for amphibians. Best regards.

Hi grius, welcome to the forum. Slugs are included in this forum, even though the main focus is on snails. You seem to be asking about a dietary question for salamanders. We can give advice about how to care for slugs, but unless there are other salamander keepers here, I don't think we can give salamander feeding advice. It's possible that the other forums you posted on have not provided any good answers because not enough is known about those particular slugs. Hopefully someone here will be able to help you out, though.

Hmmh.. Where is you salamanders species from originally? If you could make little search where that species has been living in wild? Then you could search if in same waters live somekind of snails. To make sure it would be natural them to eat such as snails/slugs. Snails and slugs are almost same, but slugs have atrophic shell and remainings are under that skin fold so they need little bit calsium too. Snails and slugs caring it little bit different slug tank should not let dry 'cos slugs don't have shell to hide in like snails. And what I have read slugs live about 3years depenping species. Hope this helps you little. Also if they eat snails/slugs it's don't mind if they are land snails 'cos snails on land and sea only has different way to breath. I have kept moment some slugs and way to care them don't too much different between those two only slugs need more humidity.

Well my Tigersalamanders(Ambystoma.m.m) have a wide spread area, they range from central Nebraska south to southern Texas and west to central Colorado and New Mexico. But it dosent matter if i know wich slugs i can find in their natural habitat( i meen most for my firesalamanders) because i cant find slugs anyhow. :-/I have send mail to online stores and asked in forum without any good result. The african species(Emphysetes udzungwensis) is though avaible in germany, but i dont know if they are bad as food. Then we have(Deroceras reticulatum) for sale in UK, wich is great as salamander and frog food! but of curse they are out of stock. The other salamander i have is firesalamanders. and they eat slugs in wild. Yes i have allready order fresh water snails to breed that will arrive next week. I also have a group Achantina sp that i hope shall start breed soon. Im sorry if my thread goes to much of topik with all salamander talk. Regards.

Yes, well I give soon to some turtles keeper few achatina species eggs to them as food, but I think nature those two would never meet. I think it's not always so important to have right species from same side of world if not possible find at least find info that salamanders meet some slugs so you know when they eat they can benefit otherwise it would be too weird feed then all herps can eat everything or then can but don't digestion food right. It's some times hard to find same as in wild they would eat. Mostly in snails and slug some species taste different and have to find that species which your animal prefer the best and what you can keep life and it's easy to care of. I think is nice topic talk about, it's natural I think some one gets eaten and lucky ones stays alive and grows big and starts to breed. But it's always good to try to get same species if possible for them. Hope you snails change to eggmachines like mine.

Hi. There are so many food insects etc. that we use i captivity that our reptiles/amphibians wount meet in the wild, but still its good food for them:) and for most of the time it works just fine. My tigers take adult B.dubia (cockroach) that even is hard to digest and they dont find them in their habitat... I dont know if we are in the same subject now, but i understand your point "It's some times hard to find same as in wild they would eat. Mostly in snails and slug some species taste different and have to find that species which your animal prefer the best and what you can keep life and it's easy to care of. " Exactly thats my thought, i want a species that are easy to breed and preferably all year round. I know some species that work just fine as food that i just cant find! thats odd i think. I cant really understand wy it is this hard to fins slugs for sale that works as food for reptilians/amphibians. I mean there are a lot of snails we know works great and especially for african monitors. Pancake slug sound like a nice meal hehe.. Limax maximus should also work. Other species from that family is good what i have read in a salamander forum. Thanks:) this fresh water snail breed like crazy and are very easy to keep according to the seller. I pay 14euro for 50st adult snails. Regards.

So finally my searching gives result. I now have talked to a german reptile/amphibian store who is gona send their local slug species to me. So try to breed them as long its possible before hibernation time.
And i friend will send me some limax maximus he collects in a forest long away from roads and traffic were he live. I had no idea that we have leopard slug in sweden.
Regards.
