OKay so, I'll probably go to london this saturday as my parents are going up.
I hear brixton have a load of un cared for snails. Including tiger snails.
Im going to bring my old snail tank up with me = a carry case.
I saw a google images picture with tehm heaped in a box and being sold for £2.00 each.
I know they're mostly unwell, but i want to try and bring them back and i'll sell them here or where ( Not for profit)
Anyone have any idea how much the tiger snails are?
Thank you

I stumbled across a chef's article that had a little rant about how Brixton didn't have any snails anymore "and those damn vegetarians" that sort of thing. Apparently they don't have them all year round; bugnation.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=387809#p387809Good luck with the rescue though, if there are some there.

Brixton market has margie ovums on sale today (13th May). They're in the Brixton Village covered market (NOT Market Row), in one of the "avenues" off the main path through the market. The store is next to a hair salon or wig store, and is called (I think) Ida-Idaban Afro-Caribbean Food Specialists (or something very similar to that). It's a very small store with lots of things outside in crates, boxes etc. The snails are outside the front of the shop in three big plastic baskets. There are a LOT of them. They're £2.50 for smaller snails and £3 for the larger ones. There are signs saying "please do not touch" so don't go poking or grabbing at them. Ask the staff politely if they could give you a bag to buy some snails and they will almost certainly help you pick out some nice big ones. Give the snails a good sniff before you buy them - if they are dead, they will smell awful. Snails that are either visibly moving, or sealed in are probably your best bet to get healthier ones.
The snails are not in good shape, and though the ones that I've brought home are alive, I'm waiting to see if any of them recover and survive. Currently they've had a warm bath and are sitting in a very warm humid tank with some food. I'll have to see how they get on.
The store that I bought margie ovums from last year seems to have closed down now. I've been on two different days and the shutters have been down both times. Hopefully it means one less store selling live snails.

Brixton covered market has snails today (5th July)....2 boxes of Tigers, most are dead. Managed to save 4 who are now recovering. The sight and smell made me feel sick.

Tigers?? Are you sure? I was there last week and there were two stores selling margies only.
I'm going to Brixton tomorrow anyway, so I'll check it out while I'm there. Thanks for the info.

Can confirm that there are indeed tiger snails on sale in Brixton at the moment. There are not many left and some are dead. There's smaller snails at £2.50 and larger ones at £3 each.
The stall is in the Brixton Village covered market on Atlantic Road, it's a shop called Kumasa Market on 3rd Avenue with the snails in a tub just outside the store. If you enter via the Atlantic Road entrance, the store is directly ahead of you about 20 metres in.

It's sad to see any snails on sale there. I think it's even sadder to see tigers. Not that they deserve special treatment above other snails, but in that they have been reported to be getting harder to find in the wild now due to over-collection. It's a concern that if this carries on populations will suffer unsustainable losses.

Hi everyone! I went to Brixton market on tuesday 26 July 2011 and found a stall selling adult margies for between 3 and 4 pounds...poor things are in a terrible state and between myself and my friend we came back with 14! The stall is inside in the village and the washing baskets with snails in are just outside one of the african food stalls - look carefully, we nearly walked straight past them. Good luck to anyone going down there, let's hope the 10 I now have make it

Those appear to be captive bred Tizzzy, not found in a basket in a food market, so the price will reflect that. Achatina achatina take a while to get to that size. I'd have to say thats cheap for 12 months worth of effort.
