Ok I started one lol Paul does the book say anything about skin colour of ventricosa, if they were margies, then 1 of those and a margie would breed, right? If not, they wouldn't???

The book doesn't say anything about anything other than shells. It is quite possible margies and ventricosa can breed.

Possible but not likely. Marginata can be hard to breed anyway, and they are bigger so the chances of a cross-pairing are small I would have thought.

Oh, I saw on a list as I was searching for pictures... a. ventricosa, and a. ventricosa speculatum. Maybe those really pink ones are the speculatum, and alot of peoples margies are actually ventricosa... or vice versa with the speculatum bit...... Is that possible?

Perhaps speculatum have been redefined as a variant of ventricosa since Bequaert was published. I think it is likely Lucy's are something like that rather than a few people's margies being ventricosa.

It sounds about right Paul... In this list, next to each species is a year and a place. Archachatina ventricosa(Gould,1850): Liberia, Sierra Leone Archachatina ventricosa spectaculum(Pilsbry, 1933): Sierra Leone So I assume the year is when that species was established? So what we have probably got/got coming, is the spectaculum, hence they look nothing like the typical bright pink ventricosa, and don't match the descripton by Bequaert. Or am I talking rubbish again, cos I've been on the alcopops ;D Nat

Those dates seem to indicate that it has actually now split into Arch.ventricosa and Arch.speculatum. Bequaert research was published in 1950 and it the most comprehensive review of species to date.

From the other thread, now moved here.........Not for me... I have too many lol. I'm kinda hooked on GALS anyway though. Paul yeah right your going to stop lmao.... I'm surprised you didn't go for ventricosa... or did you? lol. - Nat
I already have one, the last of Lucy's last batch, so she had reserved me another so I can pair them up. We're still not sure what they are, they don't fit the description of any of the Archachatina listed in the book, including ventricosa. They sound like margies but are smaller and have that purple strip so they could well be something different. We don't have any pictures of definite ventricosa to compare with. The last baby I had now is quite large so the other will need to catch up. - Paul
Found this picture of Archachatina ventricosa, does it help at all? - Kevin
That is the picture I have on the website, as you can see they look quite different to Lucy's but they do appear to have a pink band on them. In the book, it explains this is on the inside of the lip, unfortunately you can't tell from this photo. Also, the pink colour is a little unnatural I think. Just checked and my ventricosa does have a pink columella, it's hard to notice coz its always covered by the mantel. So they could well, even though I remember thinking the written description in Bequaert doesn't match mine or the shell above. The shell of mine is typical light coloured margie colour and looks like my other margies. I'll have another look into it. - paul
Just re-read the ventricosa section and they could be them, without something to compare it is hard to know, they could also be speculatum, purpurea, rhodostoma or even degneri - these are all purple mouthed shells. Nat, I didn't want to put you off, I'm not suggesting they definitely aren't, merely that we aren't 100% what they are. So far ventricosa seems the most likely. When I discussed it with Lucy I was leaning towards that they weren't just because the adults look like my margie adults. But after seeing them again, checking the pink columella on mine and re-reading the description I think they could well be ventricosa. I wish we had some live specimens to compare against. - paul
Found another pic on a canadian message board im a member of, I noticed a lot of different species in the pictures section and they have a ventricosa pic, well its listed as ventricosa Kevin
Unfortunately they're way too crusty to tell, lol. I have seen another picture of ventricosa and degneri together. The ventricosa on the pic had very dark shells and almost white bodies. So who knows. I wouldn't be put off, they are really nice, cute little snails. And they are more unsual than your average margie. I think very few species are definites when you get them. - paul
Thats ok Paul. Guess we just have to wait and see how they all grow, cos I doubt their going to be identical. - Nat
these snails are labelled as ventricosa, thou as i cant speak german i have no idea about what they saying www.achatinidae.com/Allgemeines/Gattungen/Archachatina/Archa__ventricosa/archa__ventricosa.htmlEmma

I have noiced slight red bands in their new shell growth which I am going to try and get pics of, next to my margie tha is the same size/age ish. Also, does anyone elses slime around blind??!! I often see mine moving without their eye stalks out lol, its quite funny to watch.
