The 'V' butt thing won't tell us much in this case - just that he's an Archachatina and we already figured that one out.

Tigers are an exception. We know Chubbs is Archachatina, he's soo margie like and nothing like a tiger. But everything else points to him being Purpurea, the retuculations, the fat round shape of his shell, the pink columella - and they originate from Ghana! Same as the tigers he was found amongst.

Yep, that's bang on isn't it! Makes perfect sense as the 2 do get mistaken apparently. Nice to see a purpurea shell.

Anjie, how big is he? I read through Bequaert last night and he says "true" purpurea never exceed 10 cm. There is another possibility and that is Archachatina ventricosa var. speculatum which sounds very similar and can exceed 10cm.
"The solid, ovate-conic shell is between olive-ochre and honey-yellow, with straight, wildly spaced, brown and light brownish olive streaks, the spire whitish to pale brown with darker brown irregular streaks, apex whitish...Suture with a rather weakly defined margination. Surface closely granulose, the granules in spiral lines and superposed in the irregular axial wrinkles....The aperture is ovate, pale vinaceous-pink within, somewhat darker within the lip edge. Columella and parietal callous vinaceous with a darker outer edge"
Personally I think it is a purpurea (shape, texture, color) but as these purple-mouthed snails are so readily mistaken I thought it'd be worth posting that. Purpurea are meant to have a reddish spire as in yours but the pics from Achatinidae.com don't so that leads me to suspect that it is probably a variable feature and could be for speculatum, as this is the only feature I can see different from ventricosa speculatum (from what I have read anyway).

He IS 10cm shell length - well, just a few mm under anyway.
We'll have to see if he grows anymore won't we - he hasn't grown any since i've had him.

The only problem with it being a ventricosa would be the distribution of that species(Sierra Leone)

It is in tropical West Africa, near Liberia.

Bequaert says Sierra Leone, Liberia etc, exactly the same as purpurea. Also, it seems the purple-mouthed species, all live in the same areas and easily get mixed up.

Paul - that description you just posted...was it for Ventricosa or Purpurea?
The inside of Chubbs shell lip looks quite dark purple in colour but its soo hard to see - he's always out and i don't want to push the mantel back too far incase i hurt him.

That was for Archachatina ventricosa var. speculatum.
The two seem very similar and frequently get mixed up. A lot of purpurea examples cited by other malacologists historically, turned out to be ventricosa var. speculatum.
