but they do not seem to be very active is this normal?? or do they need to be with other snails??? I keep them seperated as i dont want eggs and to end up with hundreds of snails!! I told my children that we had to put the eggs in the freezer and then smash them up when frozen and they said " no you cant do that its cruel to unborn snails" ( kids are 9 and 12!!) Please help/advice me.

Snails prefer a companion to play with, i'd never keep snails alone unless it was an outdoor snail and a giant african land snail. IF you dont have a heater or the humidity right the snails wont be active. Tell us a bit about your snail species, tank size, if you have a heater, and whats in the tank.

You may end up with eggs even keeping them alone - occasionally they self-fertilise I'd advise keeping them together and just being really, really vigilent. Or keeping two of different species, but even then, again, occasionally they produce 'em on their own. You can tell the children that the eggs aren't unborn snails yet - when they're laid they're just full of goo, like egg yolk, and a tiny speck of genetic material. They're no more snails at that stage than eggs in the supermarket are chickens. You probably don't need to smash them as well as freeze, though - just freezing will do the trick and is less aggressive for the kids to deal with

I do not have any heating/lighting in the tank and they are in a plastic tank I have just taken a photo of one of them eating some lettuce at the mo, i will send it to you as soon as i have done it.
