Hiya Went to a house today who had a sign on their garden fence "african snails for sale" Well the snails were upstairs and the daughter brought 1 tank down with 1 adult and the babies. The adult I am 99% sure wasn't fulica, I don't even think it was achatina. It wasn't a pointy shell like mine are, much more margie-like. The thing that caught my eye was the underneath of his shell was PINK!!!! It was a pale pink, but definatly pink. The big whorl (is that the right word) nearest the new shell was very ridged. Like it had cuttle fish 1 week and not the next. Um how do I explain it. Like a crinkle cut chip if you run your finger over it, but the lines were quite close. Apart from the pink area its hard to tell the colour, it had alot of manky soil on it. Quite dark though. But heres the wierd bit. The babies are almost definatly fulica. I got 1 anyway cos its cute and Brad fell in love. The girl said the babies were from the adult she showed me. I can't see it possible to be honest. I didn't have long cos mum was taking me and she was on her way to an appointment. I have got the womans number now though. Going to go back tomorrow. Apparently she has 7 adults. Might ask to see them all and if she'll sell any (if she has 2 like the adult I saw anyway) So any ideas on the adult? Can Margies be pink? It wasn't the tip, it was 2nd/3rd/4th ish whorls. Thanks Nat

yeah sometimes you can only see the colours when they are wet, one of my margies is so worn it looks white but when it has a bath you can see the orange and black streaks

Yeah it was Margie shaped. Goto the species page on pet snails. See the shape of the ventricosa and margie pics. Exactly that shape. It wasn't huge, maybe 10cm. Pink underneath, the rest pretty dark, but like I said - filthy. It would need scrubbing. The body was grey. It was only just awake so I didn't see the tail. Forgot to look at columella DOH.
She must have 2 fulica cos the babies defintaly are. Greyish brownish body. Red flames halfway up the last whorl like you said and little black dots near the newest shell. The baby is 0.5cm
Oh why didn't I take my camera.

So Nat, are you saying that the spire wasn't pink but most of the rest of the shell was? Can't wait to see pics.....

What is the spire? But anyway. I called them in the hope I could go and take pics tonight and collect tomorrow but they won't sell or swap the adults They were gorgeous too. But they haven't got a clue what they are. Thats not fair. They are gorgeous, and special Ho hum

The spire is the pointy bit of the shell, I used to call it the apex but now I'm adopting malacology terms I know this is hassle but perhaps you could get her to take pics and join up on here so we can all see them. Or let you take pics for educational purposes. Did the ridges look uniform, like evenly spaced all over the shell or did it just look like bad care?

Oh I see, no that wasn't pink. All the underneath was pink and coming up around the sides. The ridges looked as though they were meant to be there. Very evenly spaced, about 2mm deep and 2mm apart each one, but only on the main whorl. There was plenty of cuttlefish in with them too so I can't see it being a lack of that, just looks as though it was. They aren't online, I doubt they even know what a camera is 'Rough' family of the rough estate rofl I'm not sure I want to know what they are now I can't have them, I'd just be even more jealous I have left my phone number with them in case they ever get any 'different looking' babies to what they have now. They are convinced the babies are from that snail but didn't see it lay Ho hum.
