It was likely just a coincidence. I feed my guys grapes a lot, and they love them to bits.

Okay, thanks. Also, with my new slug, I gave him a bit of tomato and he wasn't eating it, just the lettuce, but when I put watermelon in, he ate a ton of it and I think he gained like 10 ounces, but he didn't eat the tomato. Is tomato not good for him or is he picky? Sorry, I'm still basically a newbie when it comes to snail or slug preferences.

Some will devour tomato, some don't seem to care for it. I think it's a matter of the slug/snail's personal preferences.

Is tomato not good for him or is he picky? Sorry, I'm still basically a newbie when it comes to snail or slug preferences. Hey, I don't have slugs, but I have aspersas, and they love tomatoes! I can't imagine that the tomato is dangerous or bad for your slug, but he may just be picky. Even my snails are picky with things that other people's snails love... P.S. For anyone else in this thread, I've got a question. I recently have been feeding my snails fish flakes (which they loved - it seemed they were craving a bit of protein in their diet!). I ran out of the fish flakes (can't remember what brand they were, but they were just normal goldfish flakes) and I bought some of those "shrimp pellet" things (Wardley's Shrimp Pellets) to replace them instead since I wanted something that wouldn't go as mushy in the tank. They are holding up nicely but I recently took a look at the ingredients list, and I realized that wheat middlings was the first ingredient (doesn't sound terribly high quality, huh), followed by shrimp meal and fish meal (more of what I was expecting, and a whole load of other chemically things I don't really know what they are). But anyway, the "wheat middlings" shouldn't hurt them, should it? I presume if it's safe enough for a water snail to consume it'd be okay for them? As for eating it, they seem to like them alright, and are eating them, but I think they liked the old flakes a bit better (probably because those had better protein in them).

Yeah, he's kind of picky.
As for your PS- I don't really know, but if you're having problems with mushyness, then get a Styrofoam cup and cut the bottom out with a couple of millimeters of the actual cup left, and put potentially mushy stuff on it. Then you can just pick up the cup bottom and clean it off. Love your status!

I don't really need to use food dishes much anymore though since I introduced helpful red wiggler worms to my tank. They've really cut down on the cleaning by quite a bit! Oh, and thanks, I made that up myself (the status)! I'm thinking the shrimp pellets and their "wheat middlings" probably aren't harmful (especially since many people give their snails dog food and dog biscuits, which clearly contain wheat), but I'm going to invest in higher quality pellets once those run out anyways... What's the purpose of a protein supplement if it doesn't have much protein in it? Yep, exactly.

I Think there was some theory bashing about that they may not digest wheat well however i've never had much of a problem (but then again never fed them much wheat!) just keep an eye on them i'm sure they'll be fine
R.E. tomato: he's just picky. My margies LOVE tomato. my fulica just think it's some sort of ornament to be ignored

Feelah- Okay, that's good! Muddy- Okay. It took him like an entire day to start eating the lettuce, but he ate the watermelon right away... Yeah, Sluggy's weird. Do slugs rasp you like snails do sometimes?

Muddydragon, I'm thinking that since there's so many people who feed their snails dog biscuits and dog food and they're fine, I can only imagine that the wheat isn't really a problem. Of course, I wouldn't start feeding them bread or anything...
Dumbledore, slugs have the same mouths and tongues as snails do, so I'm sure they can rasp you! Oh, and since you are new to slug keeping, I know that they are more omnivorous than snails, so they would probably appreciate some fish flakes. Even snails appreciate fish flakes for some protein.
P.S. - Since this is a food thread, I'd like to post that I've tried some new foods, and I can confirm that my snails like fresh basil, will eat fresh mint (don't like it as much as the basil though), and have successfully eaten leeks. Sadly, no matter how much I try, they will not eat strawberries. Other people's snails do, though, so it's not harmful or anything, they are just picky.

My slugs won't eat strawberries either. And thanks! Also, a staff should change the title so that it's your instead of you.

Anyway, I actually keep a word document full of food ideas and I have a list for foods that I've tried and are good, a list for foods that were tried and not liked, and a list for bad foods that are dangerous and should be avoided. I even have descriptions next to everything describing how much they like the food and how well it keeps in the tank before going moldy. It's really helped me be organized, and this thread has helped me flesh out my list!

I feed mine dog biscuits (however they are low in cereal ones), as i said i've never had a problem with wheat containing foods and my snials but a while ago someone seemed to suggest that they had observed their snails acting oddly in response to high gluten foods (i think it was - i'ld need to look for it, i was hoping that person might just chime in). I know people have fed their snails soaked brown bread with no problems so you can even try bread

It would disappear faster than almost anything else, and never gave them any ill-effects. I wouldn't give it to them daily, but I think it's fine as a treat.

I think those shrimp pellets are gonna be fine! They are, however, still rather low quality for being shrimp pellets...If I owned fish and had bought these for them, I'd be annoyed. I make homemade bread from scratch a lot so I might try the bread someday...

Also, keep in mind that some of the foods on the bad list were only disliked by my particular snails, but that doesn't mean other people's snails wouldn't like it. If any mods out there have any advice on whether or not it's okay for me to post something that long or have other ideas, let me know.

Okay. Mods? xD And okay. My slugs are picky- they only eat lettuce and watermelon and turn their noses up at strawberry, blueberry (sliced in half), banana, and various other fruits.

Things my snails love: avocado, cherry tomatoes, spinach, cucumber, soaked bread, fish flake mush, my retics love apple but my immacs aren't keen, broccoli, potato They didn't eat: celery, rocket, large tomatoes (maybe because they're more bland than cherry tomatoes?) Going to try them with cherries later as we have some in the fridge

I ordered some thai food tonight and along came a whole fresh coconut peeled and cut ready to drink. I popped the "lid" into my achatina tank as it had plenty of white fresh cocoflesh on it. The tigers that tasted it so far love it (sweet & fatty appeals to snail tastes too..). Gonna offer some to every slimer to see if the others like it as well.

I've been experimenting with foods using this thread as a guide and popped some watermelon in this evening. Two of my nemoralis were on it straight away but one of my horties, "Conker" has been sneaking closer and closer to it for the past hour and has finally just stretched over pulling the funniest faces and had a little go. It was the cutest thing ever.
