Probably eggs and nesting, but I think they would do both just as well in sphagnum moss, and I think this look better than soil.

Well, enough so that the snails can burrow under it if they want to, so it depends really how large your snails are. Val

I find that the sphagnum moss doesn't stick to the shells as much as soil does, so I just pick off the largest bits and then spray them with a plant mister ;D They love it.

Do you want me to sit in the corner and rust, or just fall apart where I'm standing?

Like this: cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=29522&item=7716265358And yes that was a shameless plug for an item I bought ROFL. (The first 2 did arrive broken, but another 2 were sent and arrived the -next day- fine and dandy) As to the question, I don't really find soil useful anymore. I just find it annoying to clean off like the really fine bark chip. (But I don't always have the time for major cleaning, so it might not be that bad for others with more time lol) I have capillary matting as a base now and then throw moss all over it Lol. I find the moss so much better as it's easier to resuse (for me anyway) and I think it does look nicer. My big tank also has a square plastic box/tub of moss in it for them to lay their eggs in, and so far my Fulica have been smart and -have- laid in the tub/box and not the tank! ;D

The sphagnum moss? You should be able to get it from anywhere. There is a green terranium moss that most reptile shops sell, but it isn't sphagnum and doesn't hold the water as well.
I bought some sphagnum from ebay (got it dry so postage wasn't over the top and it's easier to store when dry) but I bought 2 bags of it fresh and wet from my local garden center. It says it's all natural, collected from a natural sorce etc. All I did was give it a good wash and put it in the tanks. Then when it's dirty just give it a wash again and it will be as good as new.

Soil, or sphagnum moss, can both be bought from your local garden store. 2-3cm I find is enough, as long as they can hide their bodies. You put it on the bottom of the tank 'doh'. It is used for them to bury, sleep and lay eggs in. Would you like to live in a cold plastic/glass floor? Nat
