Hi I thought we could try to start a cepaea thread for anyone that owns or is interested in cepaeas. To post pictures of their cepaeas and share information or ask questions or get help. vallery * A great Idea for this sight by joka1 is if we could *post single individual photos of our cepaeas and add their *country and *origin, and I was thinking we could also add *species name, *color morph,*amount of bands or *unbanded to the photo and any information. Plus it would be nice seeing photos of them and different behavior. Joka1 one said it could be a nice photo data base. I agree. *Anyone just viewing is welcome to add comments as well Photo by Vallery Species: cepaea hortensis Color Morph: Yellow Bands: 5 Origin: Muskoka, Ontario, Canada Pet Attachments:

Good idea! ;D Here are my current collection, 2 Cepaea nemoralis and 8 Cepaea hortensis (found 2 clutches of eggs yesterday, so am very excited to see what emerges haha!) I keep mine on compost with worms in the tank too, a hide (which they adore), a spider plant, moss, cuttlefish and branches. I mist the tank daily, and feed them cuecumber, tomatoes, and am going to start experimenting a bit more with them to see if there's anything else they'd like. I've found them to be very active and that they love to climb! I love the fact they are out all day unlike my GALS which just dig down until nightfall And the fact that their colourings are so vast and pretty a collection of Cepaea can make a great display to have in the frontroom! I love my Cepaea!!! ;D

Hi honey07 Wow they are all so beautiful. I just left you a PM and went back on to find you had posted your pictures. Where did you find them and did you find them all in the same area? Have you named any? vallery x

Hi! Thanks! I got them from a guy in Manchester, he picked them from his garden and a local wood, and sent me some of the prettiest ones I'm really hoping to get some more and make my collection bigger ;D I don't really have names for them, because I'm terrible at thinking up names haha! But I do like the orange and black Nem and the green Horts so maybe should try naming those <3 xx

Honey07 Yes naming them should be fun and I love your orange one. I can't find any orange here or any without bands I know there are a lot of different colors of the unbanded ones just not here. Some of mine look so similar I doubt I could name them. I keep mine in tanks with stones on the bottom for drainage then earth then some moss and leaves mine love to crawl inside curled up dried oak leaves I lay in their tanks, sticks, potted plants and I made little caves for them out of small square plastic containers that I cover with dried leaves that I have let soak in water for a while they love to go inside the little caves, I made sure the cave opening faced out so I can see them inside it. This picture of a tiny baby cepaea nemoralis he is six months old now so I will have to post an update on his size. Born in captivity in the adult tank. I lost the rest of that clutch. vallery x Attachments:

My white cepaea hortensis. His shell tends to dry out faster than the colored ones, looses moister faster. would anyone know why this is? I found him in my East garden in my backyard in Toronto. His name is Ying Yang. vallery x Attachments:

Hi tsrebel , They are all so beautiful. And what a great find. The photographs are great. Where do you go collecting and what do you take with you to put the snails in that you find? I usually end up just coming across one and scramble to find something to put it in to get it home. I want to go collecting in High Park this year in Toronto. It is a huge park in the city about a five minute walk from me. vallery x

I use a little plastic box with holes in. Small enough to fit in my pocket because I usually don't intend to find snails. I'm looking for snails everywhere I go, and find them along small roads in the suburbs mostly.

That is a great idea tsrebel I think I will try to find something like that to carry with me. Tonight I dumped a pot of dried earth into a bag. I had brought a hosta plant in for the winter but it died and the pot has been sitting there all this time. After the earth had been dumped into the bag I found a snail stuck on the inside of the pot. So I sprayed him with warm water and placed him on a piece of cucumber and he revived. So he was in that dry pot for about five months. I think that is amazing. Here is a picture of him starting to come out of his shell. * I put a post in problems and help because something is happening to my c hortensis snails shells hopefully someone will have an answer. Thanks vallery Attachments:

Hi Jorge , Thank you. I like the Idea of subtitle of individual photo with country and origin and also species, color morph and amount of bands would be nice as well. I am going to go back through my pictures I posted and add all of those things. And one photo at a time helps and like you said a photo data base. How would we convey that to people posting on here. Do you think it should be said in the first post? I modified the first post let me know what you think. And It would be nice even to have others that don't own cepaeas to comment as well. Plus pictures of the cepaeas doing different things, behavioral type things. Or problems other cepaea owners might know about like the picture I posted on here about some of my hortensis shells fading. Let me know your thoughts on this. And I am looking forward to seeing your pictures and knowing some information about your Portugal Mainland cepaeas when you get them. vallery

Hi everyone, As I have posted in the problems and help section I have noticed some of my adult cepaea hortensis have started to get faded areas on their shells. Looks almost bleached out. This picture I have posted is the worst case the others have small spots on different areas of their shells. I check the pet snail site and the Internet but can't find anything like this. Not all of them are effected and it is only happening in my c hortensis tank. I washed them to see if it would help but it didn't. Nothing different has been done to their tank and I haven't changed their diet at all. vallery Attachments:

This is a comparison picture of two of my c hortensis from the same tank. The worst affected and one that isn't affected at all. Tsrebel had a though that it may be the youngsters in the tank taking the calcium from the adults shells. So I have removed the youngsters to see if stops spreading or continues to get worse. I thought I might give the adults some extra calcium I also read that you can powder eggshells and mix it in water and spray the snails so I will try that as well. I am not even sure if damage on shells can repair. Any other thoughts or help on this matter would really be appreciated. I am afraid their shells may just simply deteriorate. Thank You. vallery Attachments:

Thanks for letting me know about your thread Vallery I'm going to get some new pictures soon! Just picked up some new Cepaea today. It does look a bit like other snails have been rasping at the snail's shell! I hope it gets better! If not it may be a genetic problem causing poor calcium absorption or something! I've seen this in a quite a few older snails found in the wild.

Hi shaydee , I am looking forward to seeing some photograhs. Thank you for helping out with the problem with my hortensis. I removed the youngsters as trsebel suggested, just wondering if I should separate the ones affected from the ones that aren't. I got 4 new rose cepaeas yesterday. They are in their own tank for now. I can't wait to see your new snails. vallery x
