Hi mewkitty , Have you tried the cucumber sticks, plus sticking slices of carrots on the side of the tank ( Shaydee's Cepaea Tips Column on the Join Cepaea Thread in Pictures has the cucumber stick tip) Mine go crazy for it. I posted some pictures of them eating the cucumber sticks on the Join Cepaea Thread if you want to check it out. It is so much easier to clean, mine rarely eat off the plate now, which always gets mushy and harder to clean. Have any of your eggs hatched yet? Mine have stopped laying eggs at present. Not sure why. Usually I end up with all sorts of eggs all the time. Valery

Hi everyone! My snails have been doing well. I got a new Cepaea last summer (a brown one, the "mommy", as I call her now), and so now there are lot of strange mixed snails (brown/red/striped/blurry ones) in my tank. However! Today my mom told me she saw some raspberries with snails in them for sale at a grocery store (the snails weren't intended to be there, of course), so I ran over and found the container she was talking about with two baby snails in it! The raspberries came from California, so the snails could probably be pretty much anything at this point, but does anyone have any ideas? I look forward to seeing these grow up! I haven't had any luck on snail hunts lately. The big snail is the brown Cepaea "mommy", but the babies are what I'm interested in. Thanks guys! I'll try to get some better pictures and post them too, but the baby (the one moving around) is so hyperactive and fast. Or maybe just happy to be away from the raspberries finally.

I can't help with the identification, but those pictures are adorable! Look at the baby snail climbing all over Mommy!

Hey guys! Thanks for your replies! They are really funny snails, they're so active! Here are some more pictures of these raspberry babies. As you can see, the bigger one has grown noticeably (I think the little one did too), they're very fat Little one: Big one: Together (little one on the top or the left): Can see the big one's shell here better:

It's been 2 weeks since I got the raspberry snails! Here are some update pictures of them and a new comparison shot with the mommy snail (who has been really inactive lately, maybe it's cold - it is winter in Canada). The two babies look to be different colors, or maybe one is just growing fast and his shell is still quite transparent. In fact, even his body is very transparent - if he is crawling around on sticks, I can usually see the branch through his foot. So weird. So, first, a comparison to the first picture I posted. Can see by the big baby's foot, he's gotten quite a bit bigger. He also has really massive foot flappy things (you know the flaps that are on the side of the foot? those things) Just the shot of them crawling around on my (so far) biggest snail: Here is the little baby. He is darker colored, and somewhat less active than the big one. I usually find him crawling around or sleeping in the dirt in the tank. And of course the big troublemaker. He is getting stripes! He is definitely very active. Everytime I look at the tank, he's out doing something. Usually eating something or sleeping on calcium. He really likes the ceiling for some reason.

Well, another week later and they seem to have caught up in size to the mommy snail! Exciting days Their shells are about 1 inch in diameter now. The comparison picture I usually do: And the extreme suction action. He (this is the originally "bigger" baby) tipped the mommy snail over. I know the Cepaea in the photos never comes out, but I swear he's alive! Just camera shy maybe. And the "smaller" one enjoying some lettuce: I have sooo many baby cepaea! I must have spent about 1/2 hour today fishing them all out of the lettuce while changing their food. They are starting to get to that point where they actually leave little holes in the lettuce while they eat. It's cute

How big is the tank shone on the first page? Thanks. I think it's either 15 or 20 gallons.

I've read that Helix aspersa take one to two years to mature, but I'm not sure where that figure came from. In my experience, Helix aspersa reach maturity in about 12 weeks on average. And I found a paper that says 8-20 weeks. So I don't think you're crazy―they can grow really fast if they have good living condition and nutrition! :-)

saskia1982, thanks I'm glad! snailboat, thanks! I suppose they are just big boys now. I'm calling the one with the whiter body a girl though Seems like a girl. Smaller, more elegant, doesn't poop herself while sleeping as much. I was cleaning my snail tanks today and I got a few new pictures of my Cepaea babies -- my god I have a lot! I call that piece of lettuce "the Ridge of Snails". Come to think of it, I might do a painting with that title someday. Here they are! "]
