They look pretty small. How big are they?

Hi pinkunicorn , On the left of this picture is an adult cepaea and above it a baby cepaea then on the right top is what looks like a undeveloped cepaea which I found in the outdoor snail sanctuary and just below him is one of the weird looking snails I found. so they are pretty small. vallery Attachments:

They look like Cepaeas with damages. Like if they got their shell smashed, but managed to repear it. And/or some genetic irregularity. That said, I have no knowledge about Canadian snails, so I may very well be wrong.

Hi Tsrebel , Thank you. I was thinking the same thing myself, but the two are so similar it is odd. They both have such a similar shape and one dark band down the back center of their shells and the a very light brown band at the side where the whorl begins. I have someone coming today with a better camera that is going to take pictures of all my pets so I will be able to post much better shots of the two. I plan to release them back into my back yard snail sanctuary because I don't know if keeping them is good for them. In the photo with the four snails I already posted the two on the right are my pet cepaeas and the ones on the right of the picture the top one is definitely a undeveloped or deformed cepaea I found and the one below is one of the two weird snails. I am also going to let the undeveloped or deformed cepaea go I think he would be better off back where I found him as well. vallery

The fact that their shape look so similar makes me believe it may be a genetic mutation.

2nd picture by Jose A. they also both have a dark band down the center of their shell. And their whorls don't come out like the cepaeas it is almost indented and a slightly bluish center. which is difficult to spot. Attachments:

These has quite a short tail. How long do Cepaeas have? Also the shell tilt is curious.
I'm going to think on this and do some research. You piqued my interest.

Hi shaydee , Yes I did keep them and found two little baby ones as well and have them too. still no identification. Thank You Brunni , I still can't find anything to identify these snails. I found 2 more very small babies. The first ones I found have grown about two times the size they were when I found them. Here are some recent photos just taken of one of the first ones I found. vallery Attachments:

Could they be a cross between the hortensis and nemoralis varieties, Vallery? Just a thought. The colouring and shell shape looks a bit like both varieties to me, but perhaps it's nothing of the sort.

As far as I know, hortensis and nemoralis can't breed because their darts have different shapes or something like that.

Hi penny , Thank you. I was thinking they must be some sort of cross between c hortensis or c nemoralis and another type of snail, not sure if that can happen. I do know there can definitely be mutations of species. I am baffled. And finding two more little wee babies the same makes me wonder if it is an entirely different species on it's own of some sort. I have an outdoor wild cepaea hortensis and cepaea nemoralis open snailarium. I found all them about 2 feet away from that near my compost pile but not in the compost pile but sliding on garden bricks after a rain. vallery
