Ah yes they are beatiful snails, also called painted snails. And they are as far as I know, illegal to keep as pets. They're also endangered.

Wonderful snails, what amazing polymorphism (individuals of the same species looking different)!

That's terrible! I can't believe people would do that but I am not surprised. People now a days can't leave nature as beautiful as it is. Poor snails.

The ebay ones I saw (2 different sellers) said in the description that they are shells from "old collections"....but who knows. If someone wants to make some cash I guess they could kill a bunch, clean the shells, and say "Oh yeah, these are from the 1950s! I didn't collect these a few months ago wink wink!"

I honestly wish they were more popular kept alive than dead, but then again poachers do not see snails as pets so that's wishful thinking. Some of their shell patterns remind me of the cepaea family.

They also remind me of tropical cepaeas because of the shell phenotypes lol.

Being snails, I'd assume they have large clutch sizes, so if they do not have demanding captive requirements like say that of a Florida tree snail then they should be easy to mass produce?

Some snails only have small numbers of eggs. i would suspect they would have very specific needs in captivity otherwise i have no doubt someone would be breeding them to cull them for shells.
The pet trade can cause far more harm than good to a species. If they're difficult to breed and there's a demand for them they can soon decline in their native country.

I think a breeding programme would do good if it wasn't for the pet trade. Say if an experienced snail breeder got permission to take say 10 snails, and released the offspring.
It would be great to see something like that happen.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was breeding programme already. there are breeding programmes for a number of endangered snail species i believe.
