Hi,
I apologize for asking so many questions at once but I really need answers.
I did a routine shell inspection a few minutes ago. Everyone's shells are okay except for Caracol. I have noticed more and more dents appearing. I have also noticed that his shell looks really black. Is this all normal with old age?

Have you gotten the cuttlebone for your snails? Though, it's not uncommon that in captivity old snails have their shells change colour.
Some snails also seem more "accident prone" than others, and old age with its weakening of foot muscles may be connected to it and the dents that happen as a result.

I saw some at the pet store for cheap. I'll pick up a few today and see what happens.

Ok, good. Cut a couple cm long piece off it and leave it in the tank. If no one shows interest in it at all, rub some of their favourite taste into it, that should do the trick.

This should help with Caracol's dents?

Your snailies should have the cuttlebone at all times as its calcium content is crucial to their shell health. Hopefully it should help with the dents, and strengthen his shell.

Hi missjuniper, sorry, I have no clear idea what the "dents" look like. Could you possibly take a picture? What species does your Caracol belong to? Thanks a lot, kind regards: wolf

Hi missjuniper, I'm really sorry to say but I can't recognize anything significant........ . Might be the periostracum is damaged, but I don't see what you mean by "dents". Sorry again, kind regards: wolf

What about now?

Yes, thanks, that's a little bit better....... . The periostracum is off in some areas and there seem to be deeper lesions / damages, too. Since when did you notice these problems? Was the shell o.k. a few weeks ago? I've seen a lot of shell damages but I've never seen exactly this phenomenon before. It's the only snail which is affected? Regards: wolf

Is there anything hard in the cage that the snail could be falling onto? If there is no cuttlebone or other calcium source, the shell could be weak and easily dented/broken from falls.

There are no hard things in their tank. I've noticed this for many weeks now during routine shell inspection.

Does he live with any other snails? It could be that he is being rasped on by others, or even rasping on himself.

He lives with six other snails but everyone does their own thing. I've never seen any of his tank mates rasping on his shell.

I'm unable to get cuttlefish bone at this time. Is there any substitutes?

I'm not allowed to use them that way.
And I already tried giving them calcium pills but people told me not to do that so I stopped.

What about foods that have calcium? My snails don't like egg shells.
