One of my otherwise healthy snails has this thing that looks like a chunk of the outer layer of his skin is missing. Does anyone know what it is and all that?

It can be that he's gotten into an accident or been bitten. It should heal on its own. All I've done when my snails have had wounds is that I've very gently cleaned it with lukewarm water if I've seen something (pieces of soil etc) in the wound, otherwise it's best left untouched.

Thank you so much I was worried he had some kind of illness but now I’m worried he could have been bitten- I can’t see him letting another snail bite him enough to do that much damage though and I certainly can’t imagine any of his snailmates doing that. I’m going to be on the lookout now though. I noticed it a week or two ago and I’m looking st him right now and it looks the same

When garden snails are mating, they sometimes give each other love bites which can cause a wound like this. It should heal in no time, but it may leave a scar.

Owwww! Looks like somebody has taken a bite out of it or something. 😬 As the others have noted, it should heal naturally. Make sure it has nutritious food to encourage good healing.

To update you all: it’s been over a month and it pretty much looks the same. Otherwise he’s healthy so I’m just going to ignore it I guess. And, no one else has a similar mark so looks like we may be safe from a secret cannibal snail. Thanks for all your help, and if anyone else happens to see this and have some insight please do share
