I'm talking about picking up, "ungluing" a fully active walking around snail from flat surfaces. Obviously NEVER just pull them for the shell and best is to just put your finger in front of them and let them climb but sometimes you need a liiiittle bit faster than that lol. My garden snail Adrian, I'm regularly letting him out for "walks" either in a very big plate or my kitchen sink which is huge and fully tiled inside and out, and he enjoys it actually, along with food and greenery I put but sometimes I need to move him and that's a bit complicated. Keeping everything wet, I gently put my fingers on the sides and the foot and in a very slightly rotating motion somewhat from underneath until the foot comes up and he's pick-up-able. And then put him in a safer spot or take him on my hand around the house a bit. Note, I've heard a lot it's not good to handle snails at all, or if needed, should be with gloves or something but I always clean my hands as well as any surfaces he'll be going on very thoroughly and without chemicals or detergents so he's been quite fine with it so far.
So I'm just curious if there's actually any um particularly "proper" way to pick up/"unglue" your snail. Weird question but hey, isn't anything about having a pet snail a bit weird haha

This is not at all a weird question! We all agree on "never pull the shell" but sometimes ungluing has to be fast.
This is what I recommend: put your fingers at the side of the snail, from head to tail. Then push its foot.
This is almost the same as you wrote, whithout the rotating stuff.

I personally have one hand on the shell, and another slide underneath it. This is particularly important if the snail is on a wall, lest they fall off and go THUNK! ππ€£

Thanks everyone Glad to hear Im doing it right, even just by intuition. And not only, actually, to be honest I think a little bit of very very old trauma plays a bit of a part. In primary school, probably 20+ years ago, I had a classmate who was also liking snails and always bringing them to school, 3, in a baking tray. One time he wanted to show us one of them particularly and grabbed and pulled it for the shell.. We saw it alright, even the teacher said its cute but when he put it back, just half an hour later or so it foamed, but some concerning brownish, and lets just say that snail never moved after that. So.. I don't even want to imagine what harm that pulling caused and knowing snails do feel pain, to this day Im very cautious. Me personally with my snails, I always was very careful and still am, they definately need gentle handling so it still makes me cringe af remembering that. Probably must have been the equivalent to someone wanting to talk to you and pull your arm but so hard to rip it off. For the love of whichever god you want, hell no!
