i know its just that i just wish americans cud have them, i just feel like theyre missing out. awww, that's so sweet of you! Really! I am from the USA, coming over to live in Scotland with my Scottish boyfriend (finally, long distance is killing us!) and I am a snail maniac. I am considering adopting a GALS, so if it helps, here's one American that won't be missing out anymore. YAY ;D

Just wanted to lett you know, that fulicas can survive cold winters. My friend found some fulicas from her garden, and took them inside ofcoarse. But every summer there are more fulicas... We dont know who released the first ones, but we try to hunt down every snail we find, to stop them from breeding anymore. Lucky the garden is surraunded by lot of rocks and sand, so we dont think snails will leave the garden. This summer we are going to make snailtraps, we put food in and wait for snails to come feed. Hope it works, it's hard to find those small babysnails.

That´s a surprise for me... I like Suomi, but never knew that they could survive in such cold climate. Well, I´m learning all the time. Regards, apple

As a Canadian wanting GALS, I can say for certain that they are illegal to import, unless you have certificates. Those certificates are costly.
The really stupid thing is that the eggs aren't illegal to import.
Oh, and GALS, all species, are banned in the US. No exceptions, no questions asked. Just genocide if they're found on the continent. Heck, even Canaliculata applesnails are banned in some States, and shipping/transporting those across state lines is illegal. Can a GALS survive -20C temps for a month? Can they survive -10C temps for 3 months? Probably not, but they sure can eat the heck out of native vegetation in the 8 months of temperate climate.

They consider any Achatinidae to be a pest including Limicolaria. But according to a post on cybersnail (6 Jun 2006) some parts of the US may be allowed to have them:

Megalobulimus definitely aren't allowed, they are listed as a pest species, and have spread to islands like Barbados and Martinique and possibly parts of the US mainland.

She's in Oregon, which is a temperate rainforest-type climate. Definately not one of the States that is considered a cold-winter State. Some States allowing "some" GALS is very very new. It's also new that Marisa, Canaliculata Apple snails are now illegal to own in some States, illegal to ship across state lines, and now require a permit for ALL shipping of Applesnails. Hmmmmm........
