I have several Limax maximus that appear to be extremely picky eaters. They won't touch greens in any form, peanut butter, sweet potato, carrot, apple or bread. They shun most of the things that the other slugs and snails love. The only things they will eat are pork, chicken, fish, mushroom, egg yolk, canned green beans and cucumber.
Is this normal behavior for this species, or did I just end up with a bunch of food snobs?
You've got snobby slugs mal, I'm quite convinced! Limax maximus hasn't invaded North America, Australia and countless other localities by being fussy! Mine will eat just about anything I set in front of them. And interestingly they will NOT eat chicken or fish, and dog biscuit isn't their fav although they will take small chews on it from time to time, and they do like boiled egg.
Makes me wonder how they got so big and fat in the wild being that snooty about food. They looked like sausages (and still do). Oh, did I mention they won't even eat sweet potato? Everyone else loves it, but it's not good enough for them.
Well, of your list, none of my slugs are super thrilled about carrot or apple, and I don't feed bread, nor have I tried canned green beans or peanut butter (tho PB sounds like a good idea!). But my L. maximus like sweet potato and cucumber just fine! I think their favourite is probably cantaloupe, and romaine lettuce ...
