Just started a tank for a helix pomatia a week or two ago.. I put the snail in today.. but looking at everyone elses tanks... I'm worried mine might be to complex and to many variables to keep well. I went out into the woods and collected different plants and moss and just planted them in some organic soil. How the heck am I going to check for eggs! I almost collected a earth worm today at the same time.. but I wasn't sure. Its hard to see size, but the tank is about 40CM around. Also, not shown in photo is the lid I made from wire mesh and a climbing log. I know for a fact there are some various bugs in there... Any advice? Should I just scrap all this and go simple? It looks beautiful! I have a lot of things in my tank too compared to others I've seen. There are quite some different insects in there too. Tiny spiders, bugs, worms and mites. But those don't seem to pose a problem other than the fact that I get tiny spider webs in my tank. However it does give me a hard time keeping track of the one baby snail I have. The reason it's manageable for be is because I can easily reach everything when I take off the lid. So for your tank, I think you decorated it beautifully, but I think the vase shape might be an issue because you cannot reach everywhere. My advice would be either to keep it simple in this vase, or to move the contents to a container where you can easily reach everything. Thanks for the advice, So far I feel I can easily fit my hand in.. my biggest issue... finding the eggs without digging up all the plants? I think I may simplify.

possbily a daft question but does the tank have a lid? if not they'll be off out of there and exploring in no time. snails often like to lay around roots of plants so you will need to dig the plants up to check for eggs, this is why i have fake plants and easilty moveable objects (like plastic plant-pots).

No worries, yes, I made sure to fashion one with wire mesh. They did some full loops around the tank last night preferring to sleep on the glass... but I did see some snail slime this morning at the base of the fern so I'm sure you are right as that seems the ideal spot for some little babies when the time comes... and at the rate they were on each other... I'm sure it wont be long. I ended up just biting the bullet last night and getting a friend for it. I brought two in from the compost bin out back and my current one quickly chose it's preferred mate. I figure I have a few months until winter hits and I can't put any babies outside anymore.. so I can do a test run in this configuration and then move to something more simple for the winter. Thanks for the advice!

I took new pictures, also re-arranged it somewhat. Also, I now have a mini-tank for my tiny snail Storm. My main tank is very busy, which makes it pretty care-intensive but ever so much fun to watch. It also has a live strawberry plant growing in it, which surprisingly grew a whole new one in the past few days. Perhaps someday it will grow strawberries which the snails can then eat. Almost a self-sufficient thing in that case ^_^

Do aquatic snail tanks count? I was thinking about posting my 10 gallon.
