Halonen is definitely making contact with the other snails now. She just put one big eye down Ewert's burrow, and then found where Taavetti had gone to sleep, and woke him up with some tentacle touches. Taavetti was too sleepy to do much else than push out his eyes, but this looks promising.

I would have loved to see the look on Taavetti's face when he was woken up by Halonen. It sounds like she was busy looking for him and certainly sounds promising and I really hope that they get to know each other today, seem's like they would both like it.

Yeah, I too think she really did look for Taavetti. After waking Taavetti up, she also had an encounter with little Tauno. I was expecting she'd know how to be careful with a small snail, since she lived with newborn babies in the pet store, but it was still amazing to watch. She spread out her eye stalks and seemed to "measure" Tauno from shell edge to tip (which she could reach very well, she's so big and he's so small), put a little bit of her foot edge on him without sticking it so Tauno could still move, and then took the foot edge off him and looked away. When Tauno then reached out at her, she quickly turned back to look, and they touched each others' tentacles and pushed their faces together very softly. I think Tauno hugged her neck too, she couldn't really do it back because of the huge size difference. Then they parted ways. They're all sleeping right now, but tonight there'll be the next episode in this slimy soap opera, I'm sure. I'll have my fingers crossed that Taavetti and Halonen finally get closer since they're now both making effort. I'll be posting.

Lol it's a filler episode I'm afraid, all my snails are just snailing back and forth past each other and Taavetti is very aroused when he's near Halonen. She met Mauno and there was a slight disagreement I think, because after a lot of tentacle gesturing she snailed over Mauno's face (but gently enough to allow him to pull himself away, which he did). Really a shame I must sleep at nights, this would be so much fun to watch. Also Halonen is obsessed with cuttlebones. I'm not sure exactly why, as her shell isn't damaged enough to need repair, and the front edge is dark and solid, so I think she's done with growth spurts. My best guess is that she'd laid eggs in the previous tank and that made her calcium deficient.

Aaaawwww, Taavetti has gone to sleep next to Halonen. That's so sweet. <3 Also I offered Taavetti fresh red sweet potato last night, and I don't think I had EVER seen him eat like that! So dramatic, so fast, so happy (very, very happy, his cheek looked like it would burst! ) It really is as though he wants to grow big, fat and strong asap! I'm doing a test with Halonen too; I prepared an egg in the microwave oven and offered it to her. She ate very, very, very much of it and then went to sleep it off, and she's still sleeping from that. I'll be interested in seeing if she's still cuttlebone obsessed after this. I really should have asked in the pet store whether she'd been getting her calcium and protein lately since she was breeding.

I'm so glad that they are both eating well and now sleeping together. Did you try Taavetti with some egg as well?

Me too! I didn't offer Taavetti egg yet, but I will when he wakes up next time. He indeed might appreciate the extra protein.

All righty, I put some egg next to where Taavetti was napping, and patted gently on his shell. He came out and promptly started eating, with his eye stalks all bent down. Apparently I also accidentally placed some food on Ewert's burrow; imagine my laugh when a snail face appeared from underground and started chewing on the food, with the rest of the snail still in the burrow. Too bad my phone refused to take a picture right then!

Aww! The image of Ewert eating a egg is stuck in my head now! What if... Their trying to be big and strong to impress each other?

What if... Their trying to be big and strong to impress each other? May be true. Also, Taavetti lost weight when he wasn't eating in December, and he likes the new snail very much and possibly wants to impress especially her by growing strong. I don't suppose snails like to mate with snails who are thin, because carrying & laying eggs is a risky business for a fully healthy snail too. Whatever the reason, I'm just glad they're all eating a lot and generally motivated to live. Their interactions are so great to watch now, when they do all sorts of funny snaily things.

Thanks Cliath! Mangoandlemon, I will, once there's something truly new. Well, Halonen tried to re-decorate the tank this morning by pushing at the root! She managed to only make lots of noise before I interrupted her, worried she'd get hurt. She made a very angry face and bubbled! They'll have new substrate put in today, that should be good.

What is Taavetti carrying? I've never seen that inside him before. Is this what it looks like when an egg is forming? Or are his insides swelling up?

Wow, I thought it was odd that it's not perfectly egg shaped/coloured. Soon I'll know, I'm sure!
What I'm not so sure about is what appears to be a little hierarchy drama; Halonen likes to climb over the two smallest GALS, who definitely don't appreciate. If things get too rough, I still have the small box she came in and I will isolate her for a couple hours if I must.

Ahh! The snail drama continues. She's no doubt putting her foot down with the 2 smaller snails. All my snails seem happy to sit on top of each other though the smaller ones tend to be allowed to climb ontyop of other yet not be climbed on by the big snails lol.

Yeah, lol, that's how it should be, little ones sitting on the big ones and not the opposite. Little Tauno paid Halonen back though! He was really pissed off after being climbed over (that super angry little snail face!! ), and when she started following his slime trail next time, he sneaked through a little gap that she couldn't fit through and actually got a bit stuck in. Not badly, she was able to release herself, while little Tauno watched from the other side. If that was random, it was quite a set of coincidences. Isolation box is not needed yet.

LOL! Well that should work ok if the little guys have somewhere to get away where she can't go. Perhaps you could create a few spaces like that for them.

That's not a bad idea at all. Thinking of this I remembered how much Mauno appreciated getting a space where Taavetti couldn't fit in, when Taavetti was bulldozing around and Mauno decided he owned the root and the small space that was behind it. These days Taavetti and Mauno are happy to sleep shell against shell etc, and I hope that will happen with the little ones and Halonen as well. But I'll definitely work to make more safe spaces so everyone can adjust.

Hmmm. Everybody but little Tauno were all over Halonen yesterday, holding her down, even using the decorations and walls to help. Reminded me of how a pile or Arianta sat on Rudolf and he never physically bullied the others with his shell again. Looks like they may be able to handle the hierarchy issue without me interfering, but I'll see what happens.
