I have the infinite fruit fly problem in my bedroom and I hate it. So far I've managed to stop it in the slug/snail tanks by not feeding fruit, but my cockroaches eat oranges, and of course, fruit flies LOVE oranges. I can't seem to free myself from the lil buggers. I've got potpourri, incense sticks, perfumes, sticky traps, juice traps, I don't know what else to do. Some of the buggers always manage to hide away in one of the tanks and start a new infestation. At this rate I'm going to have to haul everybody outside and start swatting.

purchace a few flesh eating plants like: nepales alatha, junatip soper, Dionaea muscipula. They need light and humid, so i don;t know if you are able to create suitable conditions (locally) in your room? if you are: it works, they they lure the flies with their nectar and catch him in their cup or lid and devour himand. the plants are very fascinating to see and care for as well, but its not an easy quick option i'm afraid..

Carnivorous plants helped me a great deal too. Also, some people pull cut up pantyhoses over their tank's air gaps.

Changing food frequently can also help. Flesh eating plants seem to be the most effective.

I use a combination of all these and so far thankfully it seems to be working.

A trap thats worked for me is getting a narrow necked bottle and putting fruity wine in it with a drop of soap and shaking it up. They are atracked to the wine and drink some and the soap kills them. Also some small spiders moved into my room and started eating them by the dozens! In one web right now are 28 flies!

What does your tank lid look like? I used sheer chiffon, cut it to size and taped it to my lid by using double sided tape and taping it on the inside. My lid just sits on top of the tank so it works great. I have not have a single fruit fly since September, and have not had to replace any of the chiffon or tape.

I started using stockings, but then graduated to stocking net used by hobbyists to make flowers, etc... It comes in long tubes that stretch completely around the wire top of the tank (up to 10 gallon size). I'll slowly pull a long piece over the top and bottom, tie it off at one end and then cut to fit snug and tie off the opposite end. Snaggle loves slithering upside down across it and it's cute, because the fabric stretches and is much softer than the screening. I also had screens custom made with nylon screening, rather than using the normal wire tops. The tops fit snuggly into the ridge of the top of the tank. And when it gets runs, I use nail polish to stop them! However, ran across this interesting site with another suggestion for fungus gnat control: www.insectary.com/portfolio-items/control-fungus-gnats-stratio-s/There is a lot of good info there, but I do not know if these mites would be harmful to the snails. I just happened to be looking for another solution for my moss terrarium, that does not house snails and thought this may be of interest. Forgot to add this site for identifying different types of insects: www.whatsthatbug.com/Link to "Flies": www.whatsthatbug.com/category/flies/
