Ive been having troubles with my garden snails dying! They all become lethargic and most of them will lay upside down and retract into their shell until they die, not moving at all. Well, now i have a snail who has been laying on it’s side, fully extended from it’s shell, for several hours. Has not moved. Ive never seen anything like it.

It is probably related to your post here: petsnails.proboards.com/thread/18922/eagerYou said your are keeping the snails for over a year without such problems. Is there anything that has changed, like new substrate? It is very difficult for anyone outside to suggest where to look - I am shure there IS something that hasn't been there before.

The substrate is the same and so is the food im feeding them. I guess im just grasping for straws here. There was a period of time where i was changing their food every other day instead of everyday, could the older veggies hurt them?? And i do calcium powder instead of cuddlebone, could that hurt them? I also go back and forth between worrying if their tanks are too dirty or if theyre actually too clean, because ive never had any example to go off of. (Where i live snails are very uncommon to have as pets)

Hi there! Thats a.. really odd problem you're having. Your care sounds totally fine- regardless of calcium source or how often you change their food a snail should be okay. Also you can't really get 'too dirty' with a snail tank- the bacteria that accumulates in older soil is actually ideal for them because it benefits their gut flora. What you should do, however, is mix around the soil every week or so to stop it getting stagnant which attracts pests, and if you don't feed them any protein, some dried shrimp or mealworms that is sold for fish is something you can feed them weekly if you rehydrate it. Overall though, nothing sounds bad enough to warrant all your snails dying. Is it especially cold where you are? How damp do you keep the tank (snails benefit from a lot of moisture)? Have you seen any insects/worms in the tank that could be hurting your snails? Does the food you give them maybe have pesticides in it?
