OH NO! Sorry to hear that Paul! What are you going to do? My fulica seems to have made a remarkable recovery, when you look underneath him, you can see an area of hard calcerous white stuff where the mantel tore away, it must be how he repaired himself. Lemme take a pic - hang on lol.

Why what happened Mike? Why the white stuff you mean? or why the mantel tore away in the first place? You're confusing me now - AS USUAL lol.

Anjie, that is great news and it seems that this problem can heal. In the case of mine, it is refusing to eat now and does not move at all. Sometimes, I find it twisted on its side. I can't bear to look at it any longer. If it was eating something I would keep it alive but it looks really really upset and weak.

Its a hard desicion to make - the hardest when it comes to keeping animals. It sounds like you have already made your mind up though - you know your snails best and if he looks upset and weak then its the right thing to do.
I'll be thinking about you.

Hi everyone...I just thought I would chip in here as I have seen this tons of times in our aquatic snails...and to be honest its the biggest killer in our tanks...in aquatic snails its caused with to much excercise or just old age or sometimes a genetic dissposition towards this...but the main cause is mating with to much passion if you get what I mean..and if a snail is a snail no matter what type there is no cure...some of our snails have lasted months but to be honest its only because we have took them out for air and hand fed them..but they dont have quality of life...and we have never ever had one that has healed and gone on to live a full life...sorry to be the barer of bad news but I feel that once this happens the snail will not pull through..I may be wrong as I have no experiance of land snails with this condition but I cant see how a snail could reactach the mantle...Linda

The thing is, I would have thought the same until I saw Anjie's picture. Perhaps the main reason aquatic snails die from this is through infection or difficulty breathing. I suppose it also depends on where the mantle has come away. One side contains the lung, so a collapse here and it seems fatal.

its an awful thing to happen, and even worse that its so common. every time i see a snail not eating for a few days i get terrified. maybe it is just nature, i mean some are bound to die, maybe all the babies are just not designed to all live to adulthood...

I haven't an answer to the question why this happend, but it also happend with my fulica Tapi This photo I made on 07.05.05. Tapi was eating anyway, but after a view days it declines and she lose weight... she retracted in her shell and only when I bathed or sprayed her she came out .... also she don't eat very much .... on 13.06. she died ... She was over three years old and for me it was very mysterious, because in 27.06. and 30.06. her two sisters also died - they were my first snails - but they don't show this sign of 'going out of the shell'. Maybe it could be ralated with the age, but I'm not sure

My Garry is fine Sarah. Have you got Roxy in a tank that she can't climb very high in? I moved Garry and Brian to a very shallow tank, so if they climb the shell is resting on the soil still.

yes her tank is about 15cm high but being quite small still herself her shell still comes of the bottom although it's a great improvement over the 2foot tank she was in before, also she laid 150 eggs a week ago which made her twice as light so that should help in that theres not as much weight to lift

if the tank is still high enough for her to climb u could always put more substrate in to ruduce the depth of the tank ;D

Sarah, if Roxy is still eating and still growing then I think you can be VERY hopeful!! Do let us know how she fares.

Roxy seems to be doing better i put her back into the big tank cuz she was getting lonely, after being smuthered by the other snails she crawled up the side and is still there, her mantle has stayed in place so i've left her there, so far so good but i'm still keeping a close eye on her for any change.
