Hi everyone
I have a problem with one of my Brixton margies...its a little hard to explain but....when I got him from Anjie he appeared to have two tails one normal one and one slightly to the side. The second one was very hard to the touch and stuck up when he moved around. Stuck up by about half an inch or so.
I jus found him partly in his shell and the hard sticky up tail has now gone white and smells.....well frankly it smells like a dead snail, He is still alive and presently in a warm bath and coming out of his shell.
Any ideas anyone?? I know its still early days but I've got a really bad feeling about this one.
Thanks Gail

OMG Gail!! That sounds awful!! You mentioned it to me in one of your emails but never sent me that pic!! ;D
Can you take a piccie now, i really want to see what you mean. I didn't notice it on the margie before i sent him out but its hard to keep track of every single one when you have so many to care for.
A pic would be great and i sincerely hope he's ok.
Anjie,x.

I have taken some pics jus now....but dont know how to post them duurrr. His tail has changed thou, before it was the same colour as the rest of his body and his was quite happily doing snaily things. Now its white and smelly. Wish I had taken some photos when he was healthy.
Sorry to see you lost a tiger in that way Anjie.

The funny thing is... i was just feeding MY brixton Margie (Scoobie) and i noticed this on his foot. It started off as a cut that went deep into his foot, it healed pretty quick and left a dark scar..but now this has formed!! Gail, does this look anything like yours WAS before it went all yickkkkk?? Anjie,x.

Hi Anjie
Yeah thats pretty much the same as my margie looked before he went yeuch. Is that what caused it then? damage?? Hes in isolation at the moment, not eating but out and about.
Its the smell thats worrying me, smells like its rotting, smells like dead snails. It seems to be the orginal tail thats gone wrong not the extra one on top, that doesnt make sense I know. If I had taken some healthy pics you could see what I mean.

It sounds to me that the damage/cut has cut off the blood supply to that part of the foot and it is rotting off. Quick test, does he flinch when you poke it. If not, and he has no feeling there, it may be wise to cut it off. It can't be good carrying a rotting/gangrenous flap around with him.

I was thinking the same thing myself, it was just a case of summoning up the courage to do. Luckily last night the damaged white area of tail came away by itself. Its left a very clean area with only a tiny amount of white left. He ate last night and this morning is fully retracted whereas before he left the damaged tail out.
Hopefully hes going to be ok.
If he was still the same on Saturday thou it was going to be a case of Mr Scapel......and hoping.

Yeah I know what you mean Anjie but I wernt going to be doing the cutting ;D it was definately gonna be handed over to the other half to do the cutting. I wouldnt know how far up to cut. An its his modelling scapels......arent I rotten ;D Anyways its ok now.....it fell off by itself...so hopefully snaily should be ok. Gail

oh your poor snails I think the food must have gone gangrenous from a cut. I guess u can just hope he will pull through, but gangrene often spreads through the body and can cause septiceamia in humans (i assume in snails also) i know that in the olden days maggots were used to remove rotting flesh in gangrenous wounds. There is also the possibility of surgery, but as its a snail this would be very hard to perform I imagine that there are not many cases of this happening so no one knows how the snail is likely to fair. If the likely hood of death was high i might try tying a string around the bad area so that it would drop off. However it looks like it has spread far in ur snail. I would remove him from substrate and keeping in a clean tank. use a jay cloth for moisture and wash him daily. Other than that.. I dunno what to suggest Seeing as some of the tail as dropped off i would feel inclined to remove all the infected flesh and wash the wound carefully. i wonder if it is possible to corterise the wounds in snails :S

Hi
Are you getting the snail pictures mixed up?? mine the previously sick one is the one at the top of the page. Anjies snail which is fine is the one further down.
I did consider tying a piece of cotton or something around the tail, but it fell off by itself. Have to post the piccy I took of the dropped off tail ;D
Hes fine now, eating well, still in isolation, but will go back with the others in a couple of days.
Not sure about the colour of gangrene in snails? anyone?? I expect cauterisation would hurt the snail, it certainly hurts humans.....but if its a choice between living or dying??? which is it to be??

Thats great that ur snail is better I wasnt suggesting corterisation as a first thing.. just if my snail was gonna die likely i would wanna try anything that might stop infection, but since ur snail is better thats not an issue

Yeah I knew what you meant, it was something I was considering as well, if things didnt look like they were improving.
Not entirely sure I could have done it thou ;D anyone know if snails bleed when there foot gets cut?? been wondering about that. They are so different from us.

Doubt it they don't seem to have blood just slime

But you can see their heart beating sometimes. I'd have thought slime wouldn't be, er... runny enough to pump around like blood. Plus: from a Wiki article. Perhaps haemocyanin just isn't red in colour?

They don't have blood AS we know it. Certainly not red. But they do have a 'liquid'. You must have seen an aspersa on the ground just after a kid has been at it....
