I for one am not 100% sure what albinoism means in snails. Do you consider albinos to be ones with colourless shells like rodatzi etc? I mean, Bequaert and A.Mead in particular consider that an albino but it isn't what you might expect an albino to be like at all. What would you expect an albino margies to look like? There is an albino variant called Archachatina marginata var. grevillei. In this case the shell is uniform in colour but still has a red columella? Lastly, check the following link: www.malacsoc.org.uk/Malacological%20Bulletin/BULL36/ARCH.HTMThey describe and picture what they consider an albino bodied normal marginata. It has the same shell as a normal marginata with the body colour pictured for these available now. I don't think people are particularly questioning your reasoning, instead we're just going off what we've read in snail terms. Perhaps the term "albino" is used wrongly. There is huge variation is skin colour in some species, but in others where variation is much smaller, a pale snail occurring gets described as an albino. But saying albino (shell) or albino (skin) just highlights the unusualness of it.

so so so can an albino be the ones with sort of whitey-yellowy skin or do they have to have pure white skin like on Yuri's puylaepti picture?
i dont think fulica rodatzi has an albino shell cus sometimes they have these red/purple stripes on them.

First, I would like to say sorry to megaernst. I was in a very bad mood when I wrote my previous messages. I can be a bit jumpy when I'm feeling down. I can't really explain what I would like to point out, but there are so many things included in the word albino/albinism. I think I know what you mean, megaernst, but many snakes which lack yellow pigmentation are often referred as albino's, but the correct word would be axanthic - lacking yellow pigmentation. I found one photo of an albino L.fulica: www.molluscan.com/shellimages/Achatinidae/achatinawhite.jpgMore info about albinism which could help explain why the shell still can have colouration: www.mdc.mo.gov/conmag/2005/06/10.htmOnce again, sorry for being upset. Best wishes Fredrik

Oh, by the way, isn't the "stripe" on the snails back the blood vessel showing through the skin?

i dont think fulica rodatzi has an albino shell cus sometimes they have these red/purple stripes on them. That's what I'm driving at really. Rodatzi is officially considered an albino shelled species but it doesn't have a white shell. So, a lack of pigment doesn't necessarily produce a complete lack of colour it seems.

A lack of one but not all pigments it seems.

From the link Arno posted....
"Nevertheless it should be noted that even albino snails are not completely white: the body still contains a yellowish-greenish colour, mainly condensed in small spots."
