Snails I Keep:

I have some wooded areas nearby that I often walk through. I see wild mushrooms EVERYWHERE. Although this wouldn't be their only diet, it could be financially convenient if I used some of those. Anyone know which kind they can eat and particularly like?(No worries, I will be sure to double check that they are not poisonous even though snails typically are pretty good at knowing if something is poisonous or not).

I tried mine with supermarket mushrooms and my babies seemed to like it Is it true that snails can eat nettles? I can't quite bring myself to try it out because of the stings; surely the soft, squishy skin of snails would be penetrated?

I wouldnt try it, but i wouldnt underestimate the durability of a snails skin. They eat egg shells without harm, and know how to deal with sharp objects.

I've had 3 different types of mushroom pop up on my property recently but my snails and slugs haven't eaten any of them when offered.

If you crush cuddle fish bones into a powder and mix with crushed plain dog biscuits it makes a good treat when you add a little water (good sorce of calcium) My snails love it!

After reading about it on another site I decided to get my snailies some lichen from the woods, and the snaillets were all over it! I don't know what species it was but it was green and leafy (I've heard yellow ones have a higher chance of being poisonous?). Anyone know what the nutritional stats are like for lichens?

I have kept 6 snails that I just kept finding on the sidewalks and didn't want to get crushed, the first of which I thought was just a pretty empty shell which went missing for a month in my apartment (snail survived and is super healthy now!) I've grown very attached to these little creatures, but feeding them was very difficult until I with-held cucumber for a few weeks (which was all they would eat at first). Since then, I've discovered they like the fish flakes (soaked in water), and calcium carbonate is a favorite of theirs - they eat the stuff like it's candy when I give it to them a couple times per week. Other than that, I've tried a few other things (potato, sweet potato, carrot), to no avail. Although, I always keep swiss chard, kale or romaine lettuce in the tank for them to climb and hide under, so they eat a little of that when they feel like it.
Still hoping they will reproduce eventually. We'll see! Thanks for this awesome informational thread!

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere! One of my own favourite leaves is watercress. Is that OK for them? Also, only seeing watermelon mentioned and it's my least favourite melon of all - I much prefer the sweeter canteloupe or galia. Are they OK or are they too high in sugar? Thanks

Some will devour tomato, some don't seem to care for it. I think it's a matter of the slug/snail's personal preferences. Hi there I think it will take time for them to eat it. just try different foods mine eats mushrooms apples, cornmeal etc. squash.

I also recommend: Blueberries (cut in half so snails can get to the juicy insides) Butternut squash (Cucurbita moschata) Mango Plantains (Musa paradisiaca) (when very ripe - totally black and mushy) Watermelon My snails are also very fond of a small amount of raw bacon now and then. It usually gets eaten very quickly. Also, I've recently been using a spirulina and limestone flour mix powder that Dusk sells on eBay and her website. My young and baby margies absolutely LOVE this and will completely devour it when they're given a bowl of it. Bacon has a MASSIVE salt content. I wouldn't risk it in even tiny amounts. Ham is the same.I second this! My snails love spirulina and I give it to my ill ones sometimes and they adore it and it certainly perks them up! When wet it does go a curiously green colour though...

I am getting my first Banana Slugs in a few weeks and I am wondering if anyone knows what food is best for making/keeping them bright yellow? I know light and moisture also play a part so tips on that too would be good. I have helix and Cepaea currently.
Thanks

Yes, hard boiled egg! But only a little bit at a time, and then remove any uneaten egg right after. You don't want to let any extra sit in that warm humid tank, it'll get stinky and rotten really quickly!
