Ok right now i checked up on him and he was asleep, then he woke up and i think that he started to eat his shell! after a few small bites i gave him a small piece of peach and he ate it! for the first time! another thing that i noticed is that ther is now a weired membrane near the shell edges that is squishy but has a shell patters and shape, you think its the healing process?and why do you think he started to eat his shell?

Have used shop bought, pre-packaged like that, so would imagine it is the same, in fact I used it all the time at first, till I discovered I could get it loose.

Nope just take off the metal bit and place it in the tank, soft side up, you can break it up if you don't want to put the whole bit in.

Post by crockatt on May 15, 2016 21:36:45 GMT
Yeah that will be the poop, it changes colour depending on what they eat, it always looks like it comes out near their mouth, but think it's just the route it takes when pooped.

If its a new set up, he needs the poo in there for the bacteria, never clean out the substrate fully, I normally poop scoop once a week sometimes leave it longer, the poop colour is fine white will be the cuttlefish, the rest from his food and it comes in firm to slimy, don't worry about it, if your snail is active and eating, even saying that they can become in active for a dew days if they want.

All additive free cuttlefish bones have the same amount of salt in them. It's in them naturally and isn't harmful to the snails in any way.

I personally can't see a thing on the pictures, they are to vague. It's better to take a pic from a distance than a close up that isn't clear. But i also have a snail who's shell was badly damaged. I placed him in a humid tank with food and sepia. After a few days he began to grow a thin grey layer where the shell was. Over the next few days to week this grey layer started hardening out and formed a new shell. He is still recovering en his shell will never be as beautiful as it was but he's fine. Mine does eat but is less active than the smaller snails i have. I think it's based on the type of snail.

Hi, the snail hasent eaten for 3 days, and before he asteviated for 3 more days..for all that time he hasent consumed calcium as well,it looks like all he wants to do is to climb on the walls of the tank and sleep/astivate.. the tank is super humid so thats not the cause, could it be that he's biological watch tells him to astivate although its humid in his tank? its summer here and sanils are all astivating now,he also stop hes shell recovery, and that hasent progressed for about 2 weeks.the good sighns are that when in putting him back to the tank floor he wakes up looking all energetic, looking around streching and then charging on the closest wall climbing and tring to get back to sleep.Im also wondering wether the tank tempature is ok ,its pretty hot here about 28 celsius. you think i should try cooling the tank? you think he will be ok? should i let him astivate?

Maybe you can try to place him a bit cooler. If it's that hot we usually don't go jumping around either. I wouldn't pick him up if i were you. I would not risk more damage to his shell. The snail i have that has been/is recovering has a shell again. But i still don't touch it.
