More precisely, do you think leopards will be able to eat fulica/albopicta eggs? I've heard that they love eating slug and snail eggs but I'm curious as to whether they can eat the large hard shelled African snail eggs. If they will I can save frozen batches and defrost them for them when they arrive from the lovely Valerie!

You probably won't find pure calcium powder but calcium carbonate is perfect for snails and cheap too.

I've found that my fulica and albopicta are actually really friendly to each other, they even mate with each other, although the largest snails sometimes butt the other ones out of the way when there's food. I'll be sure to keep an eye on the other tanks as all my snails are with other species.

Let me know how it turns out! I use my blender to make fresh coconut milk and it normally just turns the coconut into those tiny little pieces you see in store bought coconut, they may eat that up a little easier though

I leave mine outside to decompose, then when they are completely decomposed I take the shells back in, clean them and varnish the shells so I have a little memory of them

In these circumstances I've found the best way to encourage eating is to make some mush food made of things that snails go crazy for. I've found that blending hemp seeds and spirulina, with added calcium powder. Then I hydrate the powder with some water to make a pastes and my snails really enjoy it, so even the retracted ones eat a little every day and they put on weight. It seems your guy is really underweight- he may have become sick because a lack of nutrients, so eventually he'll need to have his diet improved but for now it's important to get him to eat anything at all, even his favourites. Another good mush recipe is cooked mashed sweet potato, cooled of course. I hope this helps some!

Hi everyone! I sent a message to the writer of that page and got a reply today, They say that they do have suitable antibiotics and that they can use F10 disinfectants on wounds (http://www.f10biocare.co.uk/dr.html) usually a gel or spray. I found a page selling the actual products (http://www.mah-shop.co.uk/treatment-products-9-c.asp) As for aneasthetic, apparently MS222 (Tricaine mesylate) is used, an anaesthetic used in aquariums! Apparently it his hard to moniter the health of and state of the snails while using Tricaine, and it seems to be quite expensive. Here is a link to a UK seller. Hope this helps! EDIT: it helps if I actually include the link www.pharmaqaqua-webshop.co.uk/products_subcat.asp?SubCatID=2&Cat=1

I'm really interested in finding out about the medicines that are supposed to be suitable for snails! Is oral prolapse and gut extrusion the same time? According to that page it can be treated, great news as from what I have seen, it's often fatal.

Possibly silicone sealant? Like the type for DIY and use in bathrooms, I think there's one made for aquariums that doesn't leach out any chemicals so it's safer for animals.

Has he stopped retracting as much? Wild caught snails are often a little underweight I find, I take my snails out daily for a feed of their favourite food and make sure they eat some, and they usually put weight back on slowly. If he wasn't damp enough then sometimes the snails "shrink" a little bit and so they can fit further back into the shell. If that's the problem he will plump up again when he's a bit more moist. Got to agree about the cardboard box though, even a plastic sandwich box would be better even just for The weekend, especially if the little guy might be feeling under the weather.

That's very interesting! Thanks a lot for that link, I'm quite sure that was the problem now. The soil I put the eggs in held moisture a lot better than coir and went a bit muddy, I couldnt get it to dry out and I think the wet, warm environment must have caused it. I wonder if it's the type of fungus that hangs around naturally and is normally harmless unless it overgrows and causes infection? If not, I'm not sure how it got there! But thank you for the information! Very helpful

Sorry to hear about poor little Tuffnut I'm not sure if our snailies wounds are caused by the same thing but if they are then there's some hope because my little guy seems to be a little better today. He had lost a bit of weight and was hard to wake up (he's been like that since I found the wound) but while he was out today he had a good meal and a crawl around. His tail was quite shrunken and curled up though, I'm not sure if it's good or bad. For me warm baths were good for waking the snail up and for cleaning the wound, I held the snail upside down with his shell in the warm water to wake him. I did a complete tank clean out, changing compost to coir and disinfecting the tank thoroughly. It was very helpfuk that I could get him to eat, and I really hope you manage to get Tuffnut to have something soon At this point I'd try him with anything (within reason!) Mush foods really are the way to go. Good luck!

I have a tiger snail with the exact same wound on his tail! It jusy recently appeared and he really doesn't want to come out of his shell. A couple if snails in the same tank lately suffered an infection that caused their tails to swell up and become stiff but they all appeared to get over it in a few days with no complications except one of the tigers. I didn't notice that particular snail actually having the infection but I presumed that was the cause. I'm worried about him, although after a thorough tank boiling and substrate change he seems somewhat better

There are a few people here that keep predatory snails- the only natural food for them is other snails really. It's the same as keeping a reptile that requires live food. While I and plenty others choose not to keep carnivorous snails because of the feeding issue I don't feel that it is anyone's place to judge others for it.

I just hard boil them, peel them, cut them in half or slices and let the snails the snails go at them once they've cooled

How strange! Mine really love the yolk, they will nearly always finish the yolk off first before going on to the white when the yolk's all gone. Maybe it depends on what nutrients the snails happen to be after at the time? I have no idea
