I just saw a random video about snail caviar on youtube. It was in french so I didn't understand a lot of it. The thought of eating snail eggs never even crossed my mind.. but neither did eating fish eggs really! ..Maybe a new way of using unwanted eggs!? Although I don't think I could bring myself to eat my pet's babies!
Would any of you try this? Have any of you tried this? I don't plan on eating any of my snails eggs but I'm curious as to how they'd taste!
I wonder what species they'd use...

My snail also had this problem, although I'm not sure which one as it seems to have sorted itself out quickly! I hope his eye gets better soon, it seems likely

I was looking everywhere for some of these, and eventually found a few hanging out under wet cardboard! You might be able to find him some friends there, mine seem to enjoy each others company but they tend not to spend much time with the Cepaeas! Glad he is back to himself! Maybe he had a fishfood craving the way people get chocolate cravings, and was not happy until he got what he wanted haha!

So today I picked up one of my six C. nemoralis' and he must have decided I tasted yummy, because he started trying to eat me! My other snails did the same too, when I picked them up. I couldn't have had anything on my hands, I had just washed them. It didn't really bother me, it was kinda cute but I was just wondering what might make them want to nibble me? Hopefully they haven't turned in to zombie snails with a taste for human flesh

My C. Nemoralis don't like to stay on the floor of their tank. At all. They barely venture down unless I put them there. It occurred to me that they are very common in my Grandma's garden and the surrounding areas, but near where I live (and where their soil is from) there are none of these snails at all, there isn't even that many Helix Aspersa around here... And I live less than 5 miles away from my Grandma.
Could it be the type of soil around here? I read that if there is not enough calcium in the soil, or the soil is too acidic, then snails will try to avoid it.
Is there anyway I can recreate this "snail-friendly" soil for them? Can I simply add calcium to the soil myself? Would adding clay to the soil help maybe?

Firstly, hope everyone and their snails had a happy Christmas! Secondly, I have a few questions about ideas that I had for my snails' tank. Thirdly, I would love to hear any of your own decoration ideas and thoughts too! Right~ So far my snails' (Cepaea Nemoralis) tank has been quite natural, and I don't think they really care much for it anyway. They would much rather slide around on the smooth sides of the tank and cling to the lid. I put on of those little loose gem stones in there, like a nugget of turquoise I think. It looks colorful and they seem to like taking a detour especially to slide over it. So I was thinking, rather than looking like I have a tank of mud and moss, maybe I could decorate the tank to look lovely, while still giving the snails a nice tank to explore. I was thinking a kind of treasure theme, my grandma is a jewelry maker so I have access to very cheap stones and things! The type of stones I wanted to use are like this- i.ehow.com/images/a04/r8/p3/buy-natural-gemstones-800X800.jpgAre there any that I should avoid? That the snails may not like or may be poisonous or something? I vaguely remember reading something about not putting certain stones in drinking water due to chemicals leaking into it... And I assume that can't be good for the snails! Also, I have loads of loose freshwater pearls from about 5 snapped necklaces. I've also seen some nice ones for sale that look like little nuggets of gold! -http://ayliss.com/shop/images/l/P/P020905a.jpg Are these okay for the snails? I know they aren't supposed to get wet but I don't intend to wear these ones again, so I'm not too bothered if they get damaged. I am aware that the colored pearls are artificially dyed though, i'm not sure how likely this dye is to come away from the pearl and onto the actual snails. I've never had a problem with it on my skin, but if I had snail skin that would be a bit problematic! Do you think that it's safe to use these? Any suggestions or ideas would be awesome to hear too :]

;D My Cepaea Nemoralis have shown that they are quite fussy eaters, and for some reason they have decided they will only eat fresh food if I mash it up with soaked oats, can this hurt them at all? I know they aren't supposed to eat some things like that, but I've fed bigger snails on this before and they also seemed to enjoy it... when I was a kid I used to put a soggy slice of bread outside and watch all the snails eat it. I wouldn't give my snails bread now, because of the sugar and salt in it. It's not very practical for me to feed food that's going off, as sometimes I have to go away for a couple of nights and while fresh food will only just be going off when I'm back, already old food will be mouldy :/ Also, when I've found a selection of foods that they like, I was planning on making them a complete food and had a few questions about that, as I've seen some people on this site do that for their snails. Can I give them a (dilute) multivitamin? Like the one you can put in small mammals water? Is gelatin okay for snails? Is it of any benefit to them? Does it freeze well? Is it okay to put limestone powder in the food? (I've never used it before, so I'm not sure how it is usually administered anyway) If so, does it matter how much? (Within reason, I don't plan on feeding them a slightly green chalky block) I see a lot of people say that they feed their snails goldfish flakes as a treat, is there any harm in putting it in their everyday food? Will it benefit them at all? Apart from the vegetables/fruit that I plan to put in after a little experimentation to see which ones they like, do you have any other recommendations on ingredients? Links to any recipes that you have seen would be greatly appreciated too I want super healthy snails, that can make me super healthy baby snails!

Two rather random questions really. I vaguely remember reading somewhere that snails can carry/give you pinworms/threadworms. Is this true? I would have thought that if they had them, you would be able to see them in the substrate. I always wash my hands after handling them, but it's something I'm a little paranoid about. My snails are wild caught British Cepaea nemoralis. Also, is there a way you can tell the age of snails? I have 6, that I caught this year. 4 are quite small and look young while 2 look almost full grown. I just wondered if there was any way to tell

They do seem to like slightly rotten cucumber... This is the only thing I've seen noticeable nibbles on! But considering there are 6 snails, it's barely been touched. Could this be due to it being winter? I brought them some cuttlefish bone back today, and they seem to be munching that more than they are eating normal food.

Mine are Cepaea Nemoralis I live in England so maybe they are just sleepy from the cold... A bit like me x] I'm going to give them some cuttlefish for calcium and see if they like that, but they are going to have to wait until the start of the week when I get paid! -Just a random question, where do they find calcium when they are in the garden? I've seen a tiny little nibble out of the cucumber, so looks like at least one of them is eating! So are they likely to be hungrier in the summer? I just love watching snails eat

Well 2 days ago I got 6 banded snails, 2 adult/nearly full grown ones and 4 smaller ones, they all look about the same age and were all together, it's nice to know they all knew each other beforehand x] Not really the point though. They are in a nice warm, humid (though a little small- 15cmx25cm and 10cm high) temporary tank, while I wait for my new larger tank, they all seem relatively happy and active sliding around all over the place, only problem is.. none of them seem hungry for plants... on the first day I put in some plants from around where I found the snails, dandilion leaves, and a few other leaves I'd seen them munching on. As a little treat I put in some soggy oats, as in the past I have known snails to love this... they all ate a tiny bit of the oats but none of the leaves! Then I tried them with some peppers (I've had snails munch through half of one in hours) and mushroom, and they didnt even touch it. I've put in some cucumber (another food I've seen snails completely demolish), a brussel sprout and some of the tender leaves at the centre of spring greens. They are showing no interest at all... I shall have a look in the morning but all the other snails I've kept have been really hungry little buggers! Are there any reasons why they might not be eating up? I haven't kept snails in some years.
I will post some pictures of them soon, they are so cute!
