Isn't Jade/rodatzi the name for the colour variation though? I'm wondering what species, or do they only come in one or something? x]

Possible, but I don't think it's very likely. None of my snails have done that before so I wouldn't worry too much

I absolutely adore that red/orange one banded cepaea! Are there a lot with that colouring in your area? I have only yellows

Maybe a silly question, but just to make sure! I assumed my Cepaea were getting their freak on, but they are biting each other a lot, so that the other flinches back into the shell for a second then comes out and bites the other back! Snails don't fight do they? Just making sure this is normal haha!

I too have witnessed the snail threesome! they seem to be biting a little rough with one, and that one ended up leaving the pair, maybe that was "go away and let us consummate our snaily marriage in peace"

I'm looking for either hortensis or nemoralis, but I'm looking for certain colour variations If anybody can get hold of some of the rarer, more unusual and striking cepaea colours I would love to buy them! I would especially love pairs. Here is an image of some of the colour/band variations I am interested in Uploaded with ImageShack.usThanks!

Maybe try keeping them separate while they are in "snail hospital" for a while. In pound shops you can usually get 10 of those takeaway style tubs, and lots of other styles too, although in the long run these would not be adequate housing it may provide good temporary housing for rescue snails You could let them out to socialise with each other so they don't get lonely and to give them exercise then put them back into the smaller tubs to "sleep" that way you can keep an eye on them to make sure they are not mating. Then, when you feel they have recovered you can put them in a nice big communal tank together:) It might take up for space but I get the feeling it might be a little easier! x

That's such a lovely idea! Teaching them that they are gentle and not to kill them might be a good point to bring up, maybe help them get interested in local wildlife including snails with a bit that shows them the different types of snail in your area, they'll love being able to identify the little critters they come across The differences between people and snails seems like a great idea too! Good luck! -just realised that you posted this yesterday, maybe you could try a few more schools in your area if all goes well It is great to have people getting involved in the younger generations' learning.

I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread in which people can suggest and get ideas for live plants in snail tanks. When suggesting plants it might be a good idea to say what kind of snail it usually shares a tank with. I'm not sure if it makes a difference but it's always better to be cautious! Also if anyone has any information on the benefits of live plants in the snail tanks it would be great if you could post it too! I find that out of my two tanks my snails will only breed in the tanks that have live plants in, even if it's only live moss. All of my snails are local UK snails, and plants that I like to use are: Pea shoots, I just plant the peas in the soil and let them grow. the snails like to munch the leaves a little, and will even eat the actual pea. Carrot shoots, these grow well and look a little like cress. I don't think the snails eat these but they grow well in the tank conditions. Moss, as my snails are all local species I just use the moss that I find near my home growing on rocks or in plant pots. The snails love to hide under it, and sometimes lay eggs under it. They love to sit on it too. I don't know if this would be as great for more exotic snails. I sometimes pick a few weeds from the garden and plant these in the tank too, but they don't seem to last long. In another thread Vallery suggested Hostas and English Ivy, as they grow in low light Because cleaning out the tank would be a pain with all these plants in it, I have earthworms clean the soil for me then all that is needed is a quick side and lid wipe! I find that when the snails food is going off a bit too much for thier liking, burying it deep in the substrate makes good food for the worms, doesn't attract flies and doesn't smell, but keeps the soil rich for the plants. Would love to hear more suggestions!

The other day I accidentally set two of my three aspersas on a hot date! I gave them a little treat of calcium powder and fish flake mash. I put little bits of it around the tank and put two snails to each bit, like a meal Little did I know as they ate their way through the food and got closer to each other, they'd have a little snaily kiss, then start frantically biting each other, the little white bits would pop out and they would be snail kissing for about 3 hours! they didn't actually mate in the end, but so far every night since this I've seen them replaying this behaviour, so I'm assuming they will soon! Anyway, I have a few questions about my snails: 1: My Oxychilus alliarius have been mating and laying eggs, how long do they usually take to lay the eggs after mating and how long does it usually take them to hatch? 2: Is there any way to tell the difference between discus rotundatus and cochlicopa lubrica eggs? Are lubrica particularly hard to breed? The Discus snails have been at it like rabbits but the lubrica don't seem too interested in it. 3: I've read that Lauria cylindracea give live birth, is this true? would they just have one baby at a time? Would I even be able to see the young, or would they be too small. 4: How long after mating do cepaea and aspersa snails usually hold the eggs for? 5: just how fragile are snail eggs? I had an accident with the oxychillus tank and it got tipped over, nothing huge, but a bit of the soil was dislodged and exposed the eggs, do you think they might survive? Any answers would be REALLY appreciated Thank you in advance! x

The tiny ones are adults of a tiny species, they actually just had some babies themselves The babies are so small that when I moved them into a smaller tank I had to pick them up on the blunt end of a sewing needle! I'm glad I saw them before I cleaned out the tank!

I actually got the name of the snail wrong, the small snails on the garden snails' shells are actually Lauria cylindracea!

I think you may be right about snails nibbling the first time they come into human skin, pinkunicorn! I had a couple in my hand today that I'd picked up from the garden and while most stayed in their shells one popped out for a right good munch. When I moved him from my hand he stretched out with his mouth open to go again!

I think the website said that they tasted woody with a hint of rosemary.. (!?) They don't look particularly appetising! I always think the bright red fish roe looks quite tasty, but I think that's just because of the colour. Snail eggs look a bit like they'd taste of plain watery jelly... ewh x] I would probably try it if it was offered to me but I couldn't just start munching on a heap that my snails had laid!

On a little snail hunt today I found that lots of little cochlicopa lubricella had gathered on shells of the common garden snails (is it Cornu Aspersum or Helix Aspersa!? I've seen both names used) The shells don't seem damaged at all so I don't think they are doing them too much harm, are they just trying to get calcium? Has anyone seen this before? It was quite cute, seeing them "huddling" together. I also saw two Cepaea breeding, I would have thought this would be a little early for wild snails? Would any babies survive if they were to breed now? Most snails I saw were still hibernating. Unfortunately I accidentally disturbed them as I didn't realise what they were doing! Hopefully they will... rekindle things? Has anyone else seen the wild snails near them doing downright strange things?

My cat likes to give each snail a sniff when they are out. She is very gentle around them and loves to watch them and rub her face on their tank!

Thank you guys I think the peeking snail and the snail giving the piggy back are both Lola, Haven't decided a name for the one getting a ride yet! Live plants do make the tank look better, but they do need replacing often because they don't last more than a couple of weeks unfortunately :/ My most recent ones seem to have lasted a while though!
