Are there any foods other than fruit and vegetables you can feed snails as a main part of their diet? Lots of snail species will eat dead insects, some will even eat other snails. At least that's what I've heard, I've never tried it myself. I usually give mine soaked goldfish flakes every now and then, for a boost of protein. They love it. But you shouldn't feed them with it daily.
I don't know if it counts as fruit and vegetables, but they also love stinging nettles(Urtica dioica). I collect them from the wild and boil them for a minute. This kills pests and de-activates the stingers so you can touch them. It's very nutritious, both for snails and humans!

That is so cool! I also feed my snails fish flakes for their protein but today I’m going to try them on a mealworm paste tonight.

Are there any foods other than fruit and vegetables you can feed snails as a main part of their diet? Some people use raw meat, soaked cat/dog biscuits, cooked egg, or nuts (raw and unflavoured) like cashews or peanuts as a protein source, but these should only be given once a week maximum. My snails are also extremely fond of pumpkin seeds. I also sometimes plant seeds in their tank substrate (often sunflower seeds) and they love to eat the sprouting leaves.

I don't see lichen on the list? Please forgive me if it's there and I missed it. I've always fed my snails lichen - I just check for bugs then put the branches in with the snails, as they seem to prefer this than picking it off and giving seperately. I give Ramalina fastigiata and Hypogymnia physodes, plus the yellow greeny fuzzy stuff which I haven't got a clue as to name. Obviously only give lichen where you 100% sure there is no pollution or pesticides, and make sure you rinse it off first. The best thing about licken is that if it dries out you can rehydrate and feed, though I doubt its as nutritious like that.

Be ware. Not all dog biscuits or fish food are safe. I know quite a few brands of fish food that contains large amounts of wheat, garlic and even copper. Alway read the ingredients list first.

Can they eat all types of squash? In particular, acorn squash (no results in search in this forum). What about squash seeds? Thanks!

My boy likes corn, peas, green beans, lettuce, and grass, surprisingly! I have a few small grass plants- just normal stuff from the lawn, and he munches on them sometimes. I try to offer as many different options as I can to keep him healthy

Can anyone help me? We are new snail owners, my seven year old found them on the side of a building. She was so eager to find some snails. I've read thru this list and other sites on what to feed them, but i can't tell if they're eating! So far we have tried:
Kale, tomatoes, blueberries cut in half, lettuce, spinach, a paste made from hemp seeds, banana, strawberries, cucumbers, apples...
Everything we've put in appears to be exactly where it was placed and untouched. We're changing out the food about every other day. But I am at a loss. Could it be that they're mouths are so small that they're eating and its not noticeable? Two of them are what I call medium but still smaller than a dime. And two of them are tiiiiiny. If anyone can give me some insight or tips, it will bw much appreciated.

Are they definitely waking up / becoming active at night? If not, try putting them in a shallow dish of lukewarm water for a couple of minutes in the evening, then placing them directly onto food. Leafy green lettuce or sweet potato is a good starting point.

The general rule is to always feed veggies and fruits raw if you are able to as cooking in any way takes out alot of the nutrients.

Hello again, another question if that's ok. My garden snails love curly kale but I came across a new (to me) kale yesterday called Cavalo Nero Kale. Would it be safe to give this to my garden snails? Many thanks.

It all depends on your preference and the snails you keep. The best I would say are either dried gammarus, frozen bloodworms, dried mealworms, or some type of fish food. Most people don’t like using fish food because of the added vitamins, etc, but it all depends on the brand. I can try and find one of these online if you’d like.

Are you able to give a garden snail goldfish flakes??
If so, how much should I give him (1 snail)

If so, how much should I give him (1 snail) Late to this, but I wouldn't advise fish flakes as a source for protein as they vary greatly on protein content depending on ingredients and tend to have stuff snails can't have- manganese and cupric are in them most often which are toxic to snails. I'd stick to protein from feeder insects like gammarus shrimp or mealworms

I never thought they could eat so much! I knew about leafy greens but never thought about fruits and various veggies. My snails love cucumber and buttered Lettuce! They don't like dark greens as much or rather i don't give it to them often mainly because they poop ALOT after eating dark greens. So thank you for this list!

Anyone else having an interesting situation with eggplant? For some reason my snail absolutely LOVES it, and I mean, getting even obsessed with it! Not like ignoring other food but if I put a blanched eggplant slice.. doesn't stop chomping on it until it's literally ENTIRELY gone. He loves zucchini, broccoli, sweet potato and carrots very much too but only the eggplant always disappears right away and completely o.o
As for meat for protein, once or twice a month I'm giving mine a veeery tiny piece of either raw chicken fillet or lamb. But raw, completely ignores it if it's boiled or anything. Has some inner little vicious carnivore somewhere under those innocent ever-so-curious eyestalks haha XD Also since for calcium I'm using finely ground eggshells, I'm keeping these membrane-y things they have on the inner side to dry and they get grinded with the shells so basically there's always a small dose of protein in their calcium as well.
